Open to 3 existing vacancies in Department of Environmental Protection - Air, Energy & Materials Sustainability, Sustainable Waste Management, Recycling and Hazardous Waste Management and Solid Waste Permitting. Work Week: NL (35-hour) Work Week. Salary: $77,143.55 - $113,263.75. Opening Date: 8/27/2025. Closing Date: 9/10/2025. Location: 401 East State Street, Trenton, NJ 08625.

Position Details

Position 1 — Department of Environmental Protection, Air, Energy & Materials Sustainability, Sustainable Waste Management, Recycling and Hazardous Waste Management. Location: 401 East State Street, Trenton, NJ 08625. Position 2 & 3 — Department of Environmental Protection, Air, Energy & Materials Sustainability, Sustainable Waste Management, Solid Waste Permitting. Location: 401 East State Street, Trenton, NJ 08625.

Scope

Open to permanent employees in a competitive title who work for the Division of Sustainable Waste Management and meet the requirements below.

Responsibilities
  • Position 1: Provide technical and supervisory oversight of the Regulated Medical Waste (RMW) Unit. Conduct technical reviews and draft documents and permit conditions for alternative technologies and RMW facilities to ensure compliance with the Solid Waste Management Act and related regulations. Review annual reports from RMW generators, transporters, and destination facilities. Prepare and distribute the Interagency Protocol for the Response to Medical Waste Abandonments. Draft and review technical correspondence, including application distribution letters and notices of deficiencies. Coordinate with DEP programs, local/state/federal government representatives, industry stakeholders as needed.
  • Position 2 & 3: Supervise staff who review permit applications, prepare approvals for solid waste landfills, and review closure and disruption plans for non-operating landfills ensuring compliance with Solid Waste Regulations and guidance to protect human health and the environment.
Skill Set
  • Position 1: Exceptional organizational, writing, and communication skills. Technical writing and rulemaking experience.
  • Position 2 & 3: Ability to supervise and support program staff, coordinate with multiple stakeholders, and draft final decision documents. Strong organizational, writing, and communication skills.
Requirements
  • Education: Graduation from an accredited college with a Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Chemical, Mechanical, Environmental, Ocean, Coastal, Bio-Resource, Sanitary, Industrial, Agricultural or Mining Engineering, or other engineering field related to the environment. A valid Professional Engineer’s license issued by the New Jersey State Board may substitute for the Bachelor’s degree.
  • Experience: Three (3) years of professional experience in environmental engineering work. A Master’s degree may substitute for one year of experience. All U.S. degrees must be from an accredited college/university. Foreign degrees/transcripts must be evaluated for accreditation by a recognized service by the closing date. Failure to provide documentation may result in ineligibility.
  • License: Appointees must possess a driver’s license valid in New Jersey if operation of a vehicle is necessary to perform duties.
Veteran and Residency

New Jersey Veteran’s Preference requires proof submitted with resume. All new hires after September 1, 2011 must establish principal residence in New Jersey within one year of employment per the New Jersey First Act.
