Watervliet Public Schools is seeking an outstanding Elementary School Counselor to instruct students in a Mild Cognitively Impaired Classroom at North Elementary School. The City of Watervliet is located in southwest Michigan, approximately 15 miles east of the St. Joseph/Benton Harbor metropolitan area, in Berrien County and 35 miles west of Kalamazoo, MI. The district provides educational opportunities to approximately 1500 students in grades K-12.

Job Description

The elementary school counselor will support students from Young 5’s through fifth grade at North and South Elementary Schools. Responsibilities include teaching social-emotional lessons, providing behavior supports, assisting McKinney Vento students, and helping families access resources.

Requirements:

• Must possess a valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with Guidance Counselor (NT) endorsement or Michigan School Guidance Counselor license with the appropriate endorsement and grade level.

Major Job Responsibilities:

• Participate in Counselor cohorts with Berrien RESA and Van Buren ISD.
• Build test coordinator for all assessments.
• Participate in special education IEPCs as requested.
• Assist students and staff with career development and educational plans.
• Support student transitions between schools.
• Collaborate with staff and administration.
• Create a positive, structured, and safe learning environment.
• Coordinate human growth and development programs.
• Provide counseling services to students, families, and staff.
• Address barriers to learning and access to resources.
• Support district educational vision and mission.
• Conduct individual and group counseling.
• Provide crisis response services.
• Refer families and students to additional resources.
• Uphold school policies and support school leadership.
• Communicate effectively with all stakeholders.
• Foster home-school-community relationships.
• Maintain a student-centered classroom environment with proper management.
• Apply research-based instructional practices.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the principal.
