Description du poste

INED’s mission is to conduct research on various demographic issues (fertility and family, health and mortality, migration, etc.) and to keep the general public and the research world informed about trends and developments.

Around 250 people work for the Institute (permanent staff, contract staff, doctoral students, etc.); it also hosts a number of associate researchers. INED forms the hub of a network of national and international research partnerships.

ABOUT THE TEAM

The Publications Department works with the Institute’s management and editorial committees to define INED’s editorial and commercial policy on publishing books and journals. It comprises a team of 11 people (one department head, four editors, including an English-speaking translator / editor, two graphic designers / typesetters, two documentalists who manage the open archive, a department assistant, and a sales and subscriptions manager).

The Department publishes and markets books, the quarterly bilingual journal Population, a monthly newsletter entitled Population & Societies, also published in both French and English, and an online publication called Sound Archives. European Memories of the Gulag. The publications are distributed in bookstores by FMSH Diffusion and made available to institutions, libraries, and individuals via various digital platforms : OpenEdition Books, Cairn, Persée, JStor, and Project Muse. In accordance with the Institute’s open science policy, INED Publications offers many of its publications with free, immediate access.

ROLE

Supervised by the department head, the editor will help implement the editorial programme by producing printed and / or digital publications and making them available to the public. They will be working closely on a daily basis with the editors-in-chief of the journals and with other members of the department, particularly French-speaking graphic designers and editors.

PRINCIPAL TASKS

Editing of English versions of journals :

  • Helping to define the editorial policy (positioning of the journals at international level, adapting to open science standards, dissemination strategies, scientific integrity policy)
  • Helping to create and monitor production schedules

Responsibility for editorial production to press proof / digital proof stage :

  • Preparing copy (copyfitting, correction of typographical and spelling errors, etc.), revising and rewriting, checking compliance with publishing standards, working with authors (researchers from within the Institute and elsewhere)
  • Multimedia content preparation (texts, tables, graphics) : structuring, enrichment, hypertext links, monitoring the publishing workflow (XML-TEI workflow)
  • Working on mockups in InDesign (integrating corrections)
  • Contributing to discussions on editorial processes, with the aim of improving efficiency Involvement in editorial boards
  • Ensuring consistency of English and French versions

Editing the English translation of books (maximum 1 book per year) :

  • Preparing copy (copyfitting, correction of typographical and spelling errors, etc.), revising and rewriting, checking compliance with publishing standards, working with authors (researchers from within the Institute and elsewhere)
  • Preparing content for digital publications (XML-TEI workflow : structuring, enrichment, hypertext links, workflow monitoring)

Involvement in promotion of publications :

  • Representing INED Publications at events (for the research community, general public, or industry events)
  • Monitoring the publication of the journals on Cairn
  • Updating the Population website and other webpages about the journal on the INED website

Other :

Keeping aware of developments in the scientific publishing sector, open science, and legal context

Being involved in professional networks, science fairs, symposia, and industry meetings

KEY SKILLS REQUIRED

KNOWLEDGE :

Knowledge of the scientific environment, ability to understand scientific reasoning and statistics (and associated terminology)

Knowledge of the language of social science research

Knowledge of the legal and regulatory framework of publishing

Typographic, bibliographic and documentation standards

Standards and techniques for content structuring

Editorial workflow in the context of scientific publishing

Editing and publication in an open science context

OPERATIONAL SKILLS :

Bilingual English–French Excellent writing and editing skills in English

Excellent command of the French language (vocabulary, syntax, spelling)

Excellent command of translation techniques and terminology

Ability to rewrite scientific documents

Good command of relevant software : Word, XML-TEI language in Métopes, InDesign Application of standards, procedures, and rules specific to scientific publications

START DATE

1 July 2025

DURATION (FIXED-TERM CONTRACT OR SECONDMENT) 36-month fixed term contract or secondment

REMUNERATION According to internal remuneration scale and experience (from €2,573 gross per month)

WORKING HOURS : Full time (1,607 hours per year) - 37 hours 55 minutes per week 32 days annual leave and 10 days RTT (statutory additional leave for those working more than 35 hours per week)
