Job Description:

INED’s mission is to conduct research on various demographic issues (fertility and family, health and mortality, migration, etc.) and to keep the general public and the research world informed about trends and developments.

Around 250 people work for the Institute (permanent staff, contract staff, doctoral students, etc.); INED forms the hub of a network of national and international research partnerships.

The Publications Department works with the Institute’s management and editorial committees to define INED’s editorial and commercial policy on publishing books and journals. It comprises a team of 11 people (one department head, four editors, including an English-speaking translator/editor, two graphic designers/typesetters, two documentalists who manage the open archive, a department assistant, and a sales and subscriptions manager).

The Department publishes and markets books, the quarterly bilingual journal Population, a monthly newsletter entitled Population & Societies, also published in both French and English, and an online publication called Sound Archives. The publications are distributed in bookstores by FMSH Diffusion and made available to institutions, libraries, and individuals via various digital platforms.

Supervised by the department head, the editor will help implement the editorial programme by producing printed and/or digital publications and making them available to the public. They will work closely on a daily basis with the editors-in-chief of the journals and with other members of the department, particularly French-speaking graphic designers and editors.

Responsibilities:
  • Editing of English versions of journals: helping to define the editorial policy (positioning of the journals at the international level, adapting to open science standards, dissemination strategies, scientific integrity policy).
  • Responsibility for editorial production to press proof/digital proof stage: working on mockups in InDesign (integrating corrections).
  • Ensuring consistency of English and French versions.
  • Editing the English translation of books (maximum 1 book per year).
  • Preparing content for digital publications (XML-TEI workflow: structuring, enrichment, hypertext links, workflow monitoring).
  • Involvement in promotion of publications: representing INED Publications at events (for the research community, general public, or industry events).
  • Monitoring the publication of the journals on Cairn.
  • Updating the Population website and other webpages about the journal on the INED website.
Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of the language of social science research standards and techniques for content structuring.
  • Bilingual English–French.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills in English.
  • Excellent command of the French language (vocabulary, syntax, spelling).
  • Excellent command of translation techniques and terminology.
  • Good command of relevant software: Word, XML-TEI language in Métopes, InDesign.
  • Application of standards, procedures, and rules specific to scientific publications.

Duration: 36-month fixed-term contract or secondment. Full-time (1,607 hours per year) - 37 hours 55 minutes per week. 32 days annual leave and 10 days RTT. Options for remote working. Travel expenses covered.
