Job Description:

Amazon opened its virtual doors in 1995 and strives to be the world’s most customer-centric company, where customers can find and discover anything they might want to buy online. The successful candidate will be a key part of the operations team and will be responsible for compliance, project managing Retrofits, Extensions and Initiatives (REI) of existing Amazon Buildings, planning, design and construction.

This includes the extension of existing facilities. The Construction Manager will play an integral role in developing and implementing the EMEA network infrastructure and ensuring compliance. The role involves analyzing and evaluating different facility scenarios and build-out designs. Additionally, the candidate must support the standardization of technical and facility-related processes and systems. This position combines construction engineering, planning, project management, facilities management, and contract management, requiring proven experience in planning, design, and project control of existing facility buildings.

Would you like an opportunity to travel and work in multiple EU countries and cultures? The role could be based in Spain, Italy, France, Luxembourg, or Germany, with 50% travel within the country or to other EMEA countries.

Key job responsibilities
  1. Oversee construction engineering, planning, and design for Amazon Fulfillment Centers and expansion projects.
  2. Support projects on fulfillment network buildings and capacity requirements within European Fulfillment Centers.
  3. Undertake construction engineering design and remodel projects.
  4. Prepare reports, specifications, and technical analyses to define design requirements, equipment, and services.
  5. Survey facilities, develop procedures to audit the facility, evaluate, analyze, and recommend solutions for infrastructure, safety, and security issues.
  6. Negotiate contracts with vendors and prepare formal documentation for approval.
  7. Ensure contracts are fit for purpose, cost-effective, and include appropriate SLAs.
  8. Manage site activities, coordinate planning, specify business proposals, and oversee subcontractors.
  9. Assist in due diligence for new opportunities.
  10. Coach and guide project teams throughout the project lifecycle.
  11. Ensure contracted resources meet quality and duration targets, addressing underperformance.
  12. Audit contractors for skills and competence.
  13. Inform contractors of resource or work demand changes.
  14. Establish and operate information systems for scheduling and recording work.
  15. Support contractors to improve performance.
  16. Mentor new team members on best practices.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • B.Sc in Civil Engineering, Architecture, or equivalent.
  • Experience in project management, construction, or engineering, managing new builds and upgrades of warehouses/logistics buildings.
  • Construction market experience in EU countries.
  • Experience from design through implementation and operation.
  • Negotiation experience for contracts in EU.
  • Proven management of construction quality systems; deployment experience is a plus.
  • Fluency in English, written and spoken.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with Six Sigma and Lean techniques.
  • M.Sc in Civil Engineering, Architecture, or equivalent.
  • MRICS / RIBA qualification or equivalent.
  • Chartered Engineer or equivalent.
  • Experience negotiating contracts in the EU.
  • Language skills in German, French, Polish, Arabic, Portuguese, Turkish, Afrikaans, or Zulu are preferred.
