Job Summary

The Human Resources Generalist jobholder drives change and business results using strong influential skills, the ability to build relationships and deep functional HR expertise. The jobholder acts as a strategic business partner to the local General Manager, leading the development and implementation of programs related to employee relations, recruiting, talent development, succession planning and regulatory compliance. The jobholder implements human resource policies to meet organizational needs and to comply with all provincial and federal laws, compliance agencies and Windsor Salt policies.

Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Lead the implementation of HR initiatives related to people development, talent management, staffing, retention, succession planning, diversity, organizational development, and performance management for union and non-union employees.
  2. Ensure the HR function's priorities and efforts are customer-centric and aligned to the execution of the operation's strategy.
  3. Develop and maintain a robust and sustainable talent pipeline for production, trades, technical and supervisory positions.
  4. Develop and implement cultural change initiatives to create a collaborative work environment consistent with Windsor Salt values.
  5. Provide subject matter expertise and counsel department leaders on change management (i.e., identify stakeholders, gaps, potential barriers, communication plans and measurement strategies).
  6. Provide one-on-one coaching and consultation to management regarding communication and leadership style and its impact on departmental change efforts.
  7. Provide expertise, counsel and coaching support to department leaders on HR annual processes and systems with the goal of building management competencies within the local leadership team.
  8. Function as site leader in managing the Employer/Union relationships to include leading monthly meetings, assisting with interpretation of contract language, conducting grievance investigations and providing responses, and performing other labor relations functions as required. Work with the respective teams to prepare for arbitrations and participate in contract negotiations.
  9. Lead by example and ensure compliance with Environmental, Safety, Health and other federal, provincial, local and Company policies, procedures, and requirements.
  10. Remain current on Federal, provincial, and local employment/labor laws and regulations. Bring relevant updates to both Facility Management and HR Leadership, as appropriate. Facilitate any updates to rules, guidelines and policies in response to same.
  11. Develop and/or deliver training to all groups of employees on appropriate topics (employee orientation, benefits enrollment, harassment prevention, etc.).
  12. Act as a liaison with the local community and organizations to improve communications and enhance the Company's image as a good corporate citizen.
  13. Be accountable for EHS Compliance, Quality Policies and Procedures compliance including Food Safety Program (FSP) principles, Environment Policies, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) and maintain required records for all of these areas. Must be familiar with the plant’s FSP and how it applies to his/her job as it pertains to the quality, legality and safety of our products.
  14. Act as the lead on plant-related Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) claims, including initial reporting, managing incoming medical documentation, evaluating work restrictions, leave and case follow-up with the designated representative of the WSIB. This also includes working closely with the EH&S Manager and affected Department Manager.
  15. Perform other essential duties as assigned by the supervisor or defined by Company objectives.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Required Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s Degree in HR, business or related field.
  2. 4+ years of Human Resources experience, within a unionized environment.
  3. Experience in administration of collective bargaining agreements.
  4. Broad knowledge of HR practices including talent acquisition, compensation, performance management, succession planning, leadership development, employee relations, change management and organizational development.
  5. Ability to motivate staff and effectively accomplish tasks through others; ability to foster a cooperative work environment.
  6. Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office products and the ability to learn various in-house computer software systems.
  7. Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community; effective conflict resolution and/or mediation skills.
  8. Knowledge and awareness of industrial sites. Protective gear will be required where appropriate.
  9. The position requires occasional overnight travel and the ability to work varied hours, including weekends, based on departmental and business needs.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. CHRL or CHRL designation an asset.
  2. Experience with the negotiation of collective bargaining agreements an asset.
