A social impact startup is seeking a Software Engineer to join their remote team, focusing on improving their core product aimed at upskilling users in MENA. The ideal candidate will have strong JavaScript and Node.js skills, along with a passion for empowering tech talent, particularly among women and Palestinians.
Manara is a social impact startup dedicated to unlocking human potential and diversifying the global tech sector, with a focus on the Middle East & North Africa (MENA), particularly Palestine and women. Despite high levels of tertiary education, the region faces the highest youth unemployment worldwide, especially among women: in Palestine, 52% of computer science students are women, yet 83% are unemployed.
Our initial success involved a remote solution that identified top regional computer scientists, prepared them for interviews, vetted, and connected them with suitable jobs, both remote and on-site. This approach proved effective: 71% of our referrals at Google were hired. We have since developed a multi-modal, self-learning online platform to scale our impact, which currently engages over 50,000 active monthly users and continues to grow.
Our team comprises former employees of Google, Amazon, Upwork, Nvidia, Box, and Gaza Sky Geeks. We are experienced founders, operators, and technologists.
Our investors include Stripe, Y Combinator, Seedcamp, Reid Hoffman, Paul Graham, Jessica Livingston, Namrata Ganatra, Christina Sass, and Emma Tracey.
As a member of our small engineering team, you will focus on improving our core product daily. We emphasize innovation and a strong ownership mindset to enhance user experience, ship rapidly, and maintain high-quality work.
The mission of our tech product is to:
Think of it as a blend of Udacity, Grammarly, LinkedIn, and Stack Overflow for MENA.
You will implement complex workflows in our Next.js/Node.js application, assist in building our AWS infrastructure, and tackle startup challenges. Knowledge of Next.js and AWS is a plus but not required.
We value continuous learning and sharing knowledge within our team, which works with a diverse set of tools and technologies.
We encourage applications from diverse candidates, even if you don't meet all criteria. If you're excited about this role, we want to hear from you!
While we are fully remote, we prefer team members to be within UTC-4 to UTC+3 and available from 9am to 1pm PST/PDT to facilitate collaboration. Our team spans Brazil, Egypt, France, Jordan, Palestine, Tunisia, and the UK, with staff in the US and beyond. We hold annual meetups for team bonding and co-working.
