The PhD student will be recruited by CNRS, affiliated with UMR 7533 Ladyss and OHMi Pima County, and hosted during fieldwork at the University of Arizona's School of Music and IRL iGlobes. LADYSS researches the spatial anchoring of individuals and social groups, and the construction of action at various scales, from rural to urban areas, including socio-environmental change.

The student will be part of The Graduate School 395 “Espaces, Temps, Cultures” at the University of Paris Nanterre, with access to a stimulating environment, office, laptop, and a field expenses budget (€5000/year for 3 years).

They will join the interdisciplinary project on “Climate Change, well-being and soundscape,” funded by CNRS, focusing on how auditory experiences reveal local perceptions of socio-environmental changes in Southern Arizona. The project involves ethnographic surveys, soundscape recordings, and research within the Observatoire Homme Milieux (OHMi) Pima County.

The program integrates geography, anthropology, ecology, bioacoustics, and musicology, aiming to develop both traditional and innovative dissemination methods, including musical compositions. The student will work under supervision of Anne-Peggy Hellequin and co-direction of Anne Sourdril, with assistance from Sara Frake. Fieldwork in Arizona (3 months) will involve observations, interviews, and sound recordings. Participation in seminars organized by OHMi Pima County and the France-Arizona Institute is required.

The student will contribute to:

  • Understanding socio-ecosystem adaptation conditions amid climate change
  • Designing survey protocols and conducting fieldwork with diverse populations in Arizona
  • Organizing workshops and seminars with partner institutions
  • Communicating results at scientific conferences
  • Publishing in peer-reviewed journals
  • Producing musical compositions
