PLEASE TAKE NOTE: We are currently seeking Drillers immediately for multiple job sites throughout Montana. More locations are starting soon. TRAVEL is required. If you currently reside outside the project sites listed above, you will be required to travel for extended periods of time and will receive daily per diem reimbursement.

Summary of Position: The Traveling Driller II will operate equipment necessary to install fiber-optic cable, copper cable, coaxial cable, single and three phase power cable, and possibly sewer or water facilities safely and efficiently via the HDD trenchless construction method. Must have extensive experience with HDD around utilities in rural and urban areas, experience reading prints and schematics.
Duties / Responsibilities
- May occasionally cover for the Traveling Driller III / Lead and assist with team supervision.
- Horizontal Drilling Operator / Locators are responsible for running a variety of tasks associated with underground construction.
- Projects typically operate on a 5-6 days per week schedule.
- Workday schedules may be 10-14 hours long, with up to 20 hours of overtime per week.
- Occasional travel on weekends may be required.
- Operate drill rigs and drilling equipment with high proficiency.
- Maintain daily drilling reports.
- Ensure equipment is in safe working condition and conduct routine and preventative maintenance, as needed.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of MSDS, CEUs, and JSAs.
- Complete well logs, logbook, repair orders, tailgates, and Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports.
- Promote positive and professional relationships with team members and clients.
- Complete other duties and projects, as assigned.
Required Skills & Abilities:
- Must possess good problem-solving skills and be adaptable.
- Ability to develop bore path plan to ensure all utilities are located.
- Various related equipment operating experience required, such as mini excavator, Vac Truck, etc.
- Inspect / maintain job equipment and tools.
- Basic Computer Skills - e-mail, photo editing, maintain bore logs, red-line drawings, PDF Prints, Digi-mark Software, and basic Excel.
- Operate heavy equipment and tools associated with construction activities, as needed.
- Maintain and operate equipment per safety and company guidelines.
- Operate horizontal directional drill rig (HDD).
- Operate excavation equipment (backhoe, trencher, hydro-vac, etc.) as needed.
- Always operate and maintain vehicles and equipment safely.
- Report vehicle and equipment maintenance requirements to team lead.
- Repair damaged equipment as directed by the team lead or project manager.
- Communicate effectively with others.
- Maintain positive public relations.
- Walk and confirm bore path, spot utilities.
- Perform job site analysis (JSA) including completion of paperwork.
- Ensure proper clearances for installation per standards and policies.
- Record the depth of the tool head as required.
- Ensure the drill head is in a good position at the exit pit to connect the product.
- Follow and complete tasks assigned by the team lead.
- Ensure the job site is safe for employees and pedestrians.
- Read specs and prints.
Education and Experience:
- 2-4 years of experience with Horizontal Directional Drilling around utilities in rural and urban areas.
- Experience working with various brands of drilling and locating equipment.
- Knowledge of Utility Construction Procedures, including print reading.
- High School diploma or GED.
Additional Hiring Requirements:
- Willingness to travel throughout various locations in/out of state with some overnight stays.
- Reliable transportation to first job site.
- Cell phone for clocking in/out via mobile app.
- Pass drug screen and criminal background check.
- Valid driver’s license and satisfactory Motor Vehicle Report.
- CDL highly preferred but not required.
- Maintain interstate DOT Medical Card and meet FMCSA requirements.
- Legal right to work in the U.S.
Physical Demands:
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Ability to walk, sit, stand, bend, twist, push, pull, carry, and lift as needed.
- Ability to coordinate eyes, hands, feet, and limbs for skilled movement.
- Willingness to travel and be away from home for extended periods.
