Job Description:

Who are we?

Biomemory, founded in 2021, boldly stands at the crossroads of biotechnology and computing, driven by a passion for sustainability. As pioneers in DNA data storage, we confront the cost, real-estate and environmental impact of traditional data centers. Our secret weapon? Harnessing the power of synthetic biology, automation and mass-parallelization to build Data Storage equipment craft using enduring DNA strands as the data storage media fragments, stored as timeless polymers—no energy required.

After securing a €17M Series A in early 2025, we are now entering a high-growth phase — aiming to more than double our team from 22 to 50 by the end of 2025.

Join us in rewriting the future of data storage! ??

The job ?

As the Software Engineering (SWE) Director at Biomemory, you will manage all the software activities of the company, from the development to match the system architecture and specifications, up to the production release and the maintenance, including outsourced components.

You will support the System Integration & Validation team, in charge of putting together all the components of the Biomemory system and verifying it, before being delivered to internal operations or customers.

The position is onsite in Paris. You will be reporting to the Chief Technology Officer, who drives the global system architecture and the implementation strategy. You will work with the Biomemory Program Director and the various groups within Biomemory to assure the timely execution and delivery of projects.

The software activities of Biomemory cover four domains with specific expertise and resources:

3. Embedded software (firmware, local control, automation scripts, APIs, drivers,…)

While your team will perform unit testing on its releases, the System Integration & Validation group is in charge of the integration and end-to-end testing. There are tight interdependencies and thisrequires a harmonious collaboration between both teams.

In many aspects, the software needs are linked to the biotechnology, and you will be frequently interacting with the Chief Scientific Officer and the biotech team.

You will assure the high quality and robustness of the software produced internally or externally, the documentation, and the long-term maintainability.

You will staff up the software team and select external partners to achieve the software-related objectives of Biomemory and enable the timely launch of commercial products and offers.

You will play a key role in scaling up a breakthrough data storage technology.

About you ?

  • You have a broad experience (at least 10 years) acquired as a developer and/or software architect, within projects for commercial products or offers, and spanning from server-level data management to embedded software.
  • You understand how computer systems work, from software algorithms to hardware components.
  • You understand how Unix systems work, especially those based on the Linux kernel, such as Ubuntu and are aware of many of the industry standards driving the software development for systems to be used in Data Centers.
  • You are familiar with IT infrastructure management, networking protocols and security.
  • You are a pragmatic and technically grounded team leader who thrives on building and delivering software for real-world systems.
  • You are rigorous, comfortable with agile methodologies, with a strong engineering mindset and a get-it-done attitude.
  • You are aware of best development practices (design patterns, source code management, comments, tests, fuzzing, documentation, CI/CD) and you are used to perform deep dive code reviews.
  • You remain hands-on and regularly code software and test new tools, to remain up-to-date or to help your teams.
  • You are motivated and used to efficiently interact with experts in various technology domains to assure the software delivers the optimized functionality and performance.
  • You have successful built and led software teams from development to product launch phases—ideally for large systems mixing cloud interface, IT/server software and embedded software.
  • You are based in Paris—or ready to relocate—and fluent in English.
  • You’re at ease in dynamic, fastpaced environments and bring the energy and creativity to solve problems even when the path isn’t obvious.
  • You are excited to build a team, launch products, and shape the future of the next-generation DNA data storage systems from Biomemory.

Technologies ?

At Biomemory, we build systems that merge synthetic biology, electronics, and software to enable sustainable DNA-based data storage. We favor modular solutions with structured interfaces which can evolve and be upgraded over time without breaking the deployed systems.

There are many different software technologies and tools at Biomemory and we continuously update our roadmap with new advanced and impactful solutions. Here is some of these technologies:

  • CEPH, S3, Docker
  • Rust, C++, Python, Typescript, Shell scripts, Next.js, Protobuf, gRPC;
  • Hamilton and Opentrons robots;
  • Google Workspace, GitLab, ElabFTW, Odoo.

These technologies are provided for information only and you will be driving the evolution and deployment of the portfolio.

The location & Benefits ?

The position is onsite , based at our office located at 5 Impasse Reille in Paris . The workspace combines modern classic offices with advanced laboratory rooms, designed to foster collaboration between computer scientists and biologists. This setup supports our mission to tackle the challenges of DNA synthesis and writing, encouraging interdisciplinary teamwork and innovation.

Toward the end of 2025, our offices will relocate to a new headquarters in the center of Paris, near Sorbonne University. This state-of-the-art facility will offer an inspiring and accessible setting, further enhancing collaboration and connections with Paris’s academic and research communities.

The position is subject to French law on fixed-hour contracts ("forfait heures"), with a 39-hour working week, which offers flexibility and ensures clear expectations regarding time commitments.

Biomemory provides benefits beyond the French regulations, to support the well-being of its employees and enable them to best contribute to the success of the company. Upon successful first interview, we will be glad to share the details.

About the recruitment process

To respect everyone's time, we aim to keep the process efficient and reach a decision within a month. However, as we do not want to filter applications by diplomas or seniority, we have to check skills through tests and this requires a certain number of interviews.

The selection process consists of four steps , organized as follows:

  • Introductory interview with our Talent Acquisition team (30’)
  • Interview with your potential future manager
  • Case study interview with team members (90’)
  • “Culture fit” interview onsite (45’) followed by a final interview with our CEO, (30’)

At Biomemory, we're on a mission to make DNA data storage a game-changer in data centers, averting the impending data crunch. If you're in search of fresh challenges and eager to leave a lasting mark on the economy and climate, we want to hear from you.
