The International Potato Center (CIP) is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Director of Operations to lead strategy development for modernizing all operational areas in line with the CIP2030 Strategy.

About CIP: CIP, a member of the One CGIAR, is a global research partnership dedicated to transforming food, land, and water systems in response to the climate crisis. It collaborates with 13 CGIAR Centers/Alliances and numerous partners, including research institutes, civil society, academia, development organizations, and the private sector.

CIP works in over 20 countries to improve diets and incomes in Africa, Asia, and Latin America through scientific research, innovation, and capacity building. Its focus on potato and sweet potato as food system entry points aims to strengthen broader agri-food systems, generating economic, social, and nutritional benefits, especially for women and youth. CIP emphasizes the integration of social and bio-physical sciences to address complex development challenges in food and agriculture, with a growing emphasis on qualitative social sciences to understand human and institutional behavior.

The Position: The selected candidate will develop and implement strategies, plans, and mechanisms to enhance and modernize CIP's operations, supporting the CIP2030 Strategy. The Director of Operations will enable sustainable growth, ensure value for money, safeguard organizational values and staff wellbeing, and maintain high operational standards.

The successful candidate will report to the Director General and be based in Lima, Peru.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop strategic operational plans through internal and external analyses and create integrated operational solutions aligned with CIP’s strategic goals.
  • Establish and oversee effective operational processes across the organization to deliver value-for-money and promote strategic objectives globally.
  • Manage the operations departments (Finance, Grants & Legal Services, and Administration) by setting goals, targets, and policies, and guiding team leaders.
  • Support the Director General in overseeing the People & Culture department’s daily operations.
  • Lead the development of strategic investment and business plans to meet future demands and support excellence in science, innovation, and partnerships.
  • Procure, develop, and mentor talent for key operational leadership roles and advise on the ongoing development of operational capacities.
  • Coordinate CIP’s engagement with CGIAR Business Units and other Centers to identify synergies and promote shared services.
  • Prepare and present operational reports to the CIP Board of Trustees and other forums within CGIAR and to funders.
  • Ensure compliance with CIP’s Health & Safety policies at regional and country levels.

Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in Business Administration, Finance, or Accounting.
  • Minimum 15 years of senior operations experience in a global research, development organization, or business enterprise operating across multiple countries.
  • Deep understanding of operations areas and experience in integrated planning and organizational growth support.
  • Strong financial management skills with experience in international financial reporting and standards.
  • Proven leadership in managing and developing teams across multiple countries.
  • Experience in developing and implementing institutional investment plans.
  • Knowledge of international ethics and business conduct standards.
  • Skills in managing change, setting vision and strategy, and inspiring trust.
  • Commitment to honesty, integrity, diversity, and partnership building.
  • Ability to select, coach, and appraise staff, influence across boundaries, and manage staff performance.
  • Excellent communication skills in English; proficiency in Spanish is highly desirable.
