Responsibilities:

  • Provides strategic direction and leadership to leverage social and human sciences for building inclusive societies, addressing ethics in science and emerging technologies, combating racism and discrimination, promoting human rights, empowering youth and women, and fostering intercultural dialogue.
  • Manages the division, ensures effective planning, follow-up, and resource mobilization.
  • Oversees implementation of the Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence and ensures impactful work by UNESCO ethics committees.
  • Advances development of the Recommendation on the Ethics of Neurotechnology and other emerging issues like climate engineering and IoT.
  • Leads the annual Global Forum on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence, the Global Forum against Racism and Discrimination, and the biannual Youth Forum.
  • Ensures cooperation within and across sectors, working closely with various units and field offices for effective programme implementation.
  • Represents SHS in various working groups and taskforces, preparing policy documents, reports, and reviews.

Long Description:

The incumbent operates within UNESCO’s strategic frameworks and aligns programmes with UNESCO’s priorities, guiding and overseeing the division’s research, inclusion, and flagship programmes on anti-racism, discrimination, science protection, youth, and global priorities.

Provides leadership for programme management, operational direction, and resource optimization, including the development of work plans and setting performance indicators.

Manages the designated sections, providing strategic and operational guidance, promoting teamwork, and ensuring high-quality results and visibility for flagship initiatives.

Assumes additional duties such as representing UNESCO at high-level meetings, participating in senior management, and ensuring the sector’s success.

Qualifications:

  • Experience in partnership building, advocacy, resource mobilization, and knowledge of state-of-the-art technologies.

Skills and Competencies: Commitment to UNESCO’s mandate, leadership, strategic planning, team management, political sensitivity, excellent communication skills, and cultural sensitivity.

Languages: Excellent English or French, working knowledge of the other; knowledge of additional UNESCO languages is desirable.
