Job Description:

About the Role

The primary responsibility of the Data Privacy Legal Counsel, Europe & Africa, is to collaborate with the Senior Data Privacy Director and the Data Privacy team to help Diageo leverage data as a strategic and commercial asset. This role provides strategic guidance to markets in Europe, UK, and Africa.

The Data Privacy Legal Counsel, Europe & Africa, should possess deep knowledge of data privacy laws across the EU, UK, and Africa, and be capable of delivering commercially-minded advice. The successful candidate will operate at both strategic and operational levels, proactively identifying solutions and effectively communicating complex legal concepts in plain English. They will work autonomously, take initiative, and support various stakeholders across legal, technology, HR, and marketing departments.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Advise on legal and reputational matters related to marketing, technology, innovation, analytics, HR, and digital & technology within the regions.
2. Deliver training sessions across different business units.
3. Conduct and communicate legal research on privacy, monitor regulatory changes, and provide updates.
4. Draft and review complex data protection documentation, including data transfer agreements, legitimate interest assessments, and privacy impact assessments.
5. Lead privacy reviews and negotiations involving significant risks and multiple business functions.

Qualifications & Experience:

1. Qualified lawyer in one of the relevant jurisdictions with extensive experience in EU, UK, and Africa privacy laws.
2. Experience advising on data privacy in digital marketing, HR/employment, and emerging technologies.
3. Interest and understanding of technological aspects of data privacy.
4. At least 6+ years of legal practice in data privacy, either in-house or at a law firm.
5. Proven stakeholder management skills across all levels.
6. Ability to handle ambiguity and work efficiently in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial, and matrixed environment.
7. Strong personal accountability and commitment to excellent performance.
8. Fluency in additional European languages is a plus.
