Our engineering department, the Bureau of Technology (BoT), is central to Back Market. It comprises over 30 product teams focused on developing and managing services that deliver value to customers and suppliers. These teams are supported by our Platform group, which includes more than 10 specialized teams addressing cross-cutting technical issues to enhance operational capabilities. Additionally, various groups foster knowledge sharing across disciplines such as security, backend, frontend, AI, and mobile, promoting collaboration and professional development. Staff engineers play a key role, providing leadership and technical guidance across the company, and supporting career growth beyond traditional management paths.

About the role

Back Market is seeking a Data Engineering Manager to lead our Data Platform squad (comprising 10 engineers) within the Platform division. This role requires mentoring, coaching, fostering collaboration, leading delivery, managing operations, and driving continuous improvement. The role is hands-on, with personal contribution expected, as data is a critical enabler for our company.

Technical environment

• Application: Python - FastAPI, SQLAlchemy, Celery, Golang, Django (being phased out)
• Data: PostgreSQL, Redis, Kafka, RabbitMQ, BigQuery
• Infrastructure: GCP (GCP Datastream, BigQuery, Data Catalog), Terraform, Datadog, Cloud Composer, Kubernetes (GKE), Docker, ArgoCD, CircleCI, Github

Main responsibilities

• Lead a collaborative team to deliver high-quality software loved by customers and sellers
• Coordinate with product teams and other tribes to align with company goals
• Develop team members through coaching and mentoring
• Foster an inclusive environment where team members feel supported
• Promote open communication and feedback culture
• Operate in an agile environment, building, launching, monitoring, and supporting services
• Identify and implement process and product improvements
• Create a learning environment to enhance delivery proficiency

Success criteria

• Experience in growing and guiding teams
• Openness to feedback and supporting team development
• Effective communication skills in English
• Willingness to learn about industry impacts
• Technical understanding of team challenges and decision-making guidance
• Experience with GCP, Terraform, Datadog, Python, Scala, Cloud Composer
• Experience in agile teams; experience in finance or payments is a strong asset
• Preference for hybrid work (2 days in-office)
