Summary
Responsible for implementing the residential unit's plans, procedures, and programs for up to twelve residents. This includes serving as the primary caregiver and role model to children and adolescents, supporting and implementing the successful integration of treatment and education services, and ensuring the physical, emotional, and psychological needs of the residents are met.
Job Duties
- Participates in and supervises homework, chores, and recreational activities; oversees daily routines including sleep, hygiene, dressing, etc.
- Monitors and rewards appropriate behaviors.
- Creates opportunities for and teaches general life skills, such as cooking, personal hygiene, cleaning living areas, and maintaining clothes.
- Takes children in a van on off-grounds outings (e.g., movies, skating, field trips, and other amusements).
- Assists in preparing and serving nutritionally balanced meals for special events, and cleans up after meals.
- Plans proactively to prevent incidents and resolve problems among children; de-escalates issues quickly; uses crisis intervention skills in communication; assists with containments following agency policies.
- Participates in in-service training and meetings to develop and maintain effective child care and counseling skills.
- Ensures timely and safe campus transitions for residents to meals, schools, medical appointments, etc.
- Prevents incidents through proactive planning, de-escalates problems, and uses crisis intervention techniques as needed.
Physical Requirements
Must be able to stand, walk on sloped/hilly terrain, climb stairs, run, carry (up to 40 pounds), drive, lift, listen, speak, reach, write, and participate in restraint procedures.
Qualifications
- BA/BS degree preferred.
- One or more years of experience working with at-risk youth in a group home, school setting, youth camp/juvenile hall, or mental health program preferred.
- Strong leadership skills required.
- Valid California Driver's License and proof of auto insurance required.
- Must pass all employment requirements, including background checks (e.g., DOJ, Child Abuse, Licensing, Sanction List), professional references, physical exam, and drug test.
