Position Objective

WorldFish is conducting a study to understand the characteristics of aquaculture farmers in Kenya. We invite interested research companies and individuals to submit proposals for collecting data on aquaculture farmers in Kenya. The main objectives are to:

  • Identify aquaculture farmers in selected counties in Kenya.
  • Conduct data collection surveys of aquaculture farmers in these areas.

Scope of Work

The role of the consultant will involve data collection through household surveys according to the schedule outlined by the impact assessment team. The consultant is expected to:

  • Submit a detailed activity plan to WorldFish.
  • Organize a multistakeholder workshop on aquaculture hotspots and cold spots with WorldFish staff.
  • Draft a report on the workshop.
  • Identify relevant areas within the three main aquaculture zones in Kenya: high, middle, and low production zones.
  • Obtain lists of aquaculture farmers in these zones, representing approximately 70%, 25%, and 5% of respondents respectively.
  • Secure ethical clearance from the relevant Institutional Review Board in Kenya before starting surveys.
  • Conduct up to 5,000 household surveys, each estimated to take 45 minutes.
  • Recruit and train local enumerators for data collection.
  • Locate households from the farmer lists and ensure data quality.
  • Analyze the data to provide insights and prepare a report.
  • Share data regularly for quality checks and progress updates.
  • Maintain effective communication with WorldFish throughout the project.
  • Ensure all activities comply with ethical and safety procedures, including obtaining informed consent from participants.
  • The fieldwork will be conducted across the three main aquaculture zones in Kenya, with timelines subject to external factors.
  • Reporting

    The consultant will provide monthly progress reports to WorldFish.

    Skills, Experience, and Knowledge

    The consultant(s) must have:

    • At least 5 years of experience in aquaculture systems in Kenya.
    • A master's degree in Aquaculture, Agricultural Economics, or a related field for lead consultants.
    • At least 2 years of experience in data collection within aquatic food systems.
    • Strong data analysis skills.
    • Experience with Geographic Information Systems is an advantage.

    Budget

    Interested consultants should submit a detailed budget proposal, including professional fees, travel expenses, and other costs.
