In June 2024, it was announced that two industry leaders, Danone and Michelin, along with the American start-up DMC Biotechnologies and Crédit Agricole Centre France, are to enter into a joint venture. This JV will combine their expertise, networks, and investments to increase capacity in precision fermentation through a Biotech Open Platform, enabling the production of bio-based materials and ingredients.

The multi-million Euro investment in Clermont-Ferrand will leverage the existing expertise of Parc Cataroux, a Center for Sustainable Materials supported by Michelin.

The Biotech Open Platform aims to produce specific materials and services to support pre-industrial development and prototyping, with key objectives to:

  1. Scale up capacity in line with demand, using a modular format to meet various needs in downstream processing (DSP).
  2. Build capability and support the innovation agenda of the founding partners, ensuring access within allocated capacity.

The CEO will oversee the CDMO, including fermentation and downstream processing (centrifugation, filtration, evaporation, crystallization, decanting, drying).

LOCATION: Clermont-Ferrand, France

Success will be measured by:

  • Production and refinement of materials across multiple steps.
  • Collaboration with existing clients to meet their manufacturing needs.
  • Attracting new customers and revenue streams for capacity utilization.
  • Leading capacity and allocation to meet partner needs and future growth opportunities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Execution Strategy: Develop a comprehensive business plan outlining go-to-market strategies, competitive advantages, and financial projections.
  • Funding: Secure investment, loans, or subsidies, ensuring ROI on the €20M facility and planning for future utilization.
  • Team Building: Recruit and retain top talent, fostering a collaborative culture.
  • Ecosystem Development: Engage with biotech startups, incubators, academic institutions, and local authorities to establish partnerships.
  • Operational Oversight: Manage marketing, sales, finance, and operations.
  • Board Coordination: Prepare agendas, contribute to strategy, and maintain relationships with shareholders.

Main Activities:

  • Interactions with the Board: Report to the Board comprising Danone, Michelin, DMC, and Credit Agricole; develop activities and manage economic results and investments.
  • Team Management: Lead recruitment and staffing.
  • Economic Development: Ensure financial health, business development, and customer retention.
  • Strategy Evolution: Implement multi-year strategies, including construction of fermenters and DPS lines, and explore additional revenue opportunities.

About You

Leadership & Functional Skills:

The leader should possess technical expertise in scaling complex manufacturing processes and strong business acumen to create a sustainable, commercially viable model for the founding partners and clients.

  • Education/Experience: Master’s or PhD in Microbiology/Biology or Engineering/Technology.
  • Experience in commercial and operational roles, with biotech/fermentation industry expertise.
  • Proven ability to lead a CDMO.
  • International experience and a global mindset.

Desired Business Skills:

  • Expertise in propagation/fermentation or microbiology.
  • Knowledge of downstream processes (separation, concentration, drying).
  • Experience with Quality & Food Safety systems.
  • Market segmentation, customer profiling, contract management.
  • Understanding of corporate law, finance, and accounting.
