About Euro-CASE and SAPEA The European Council of Academies of Applied Sciences, Technologies and Engineering (Euro-CASE) is an independent non-profit organisation of national academies of Engineering, Applied Sciences and Technology from 22 European countries. Euro-CASE acts as a permanent forum for exchange and consultation between European Institutions, Industry and Research. Euro-CASE is a partner in the SAPEA consortium (Science Advice for Policy by European Academies).

The SAPEA consortium is part of the Scientific Advice Mechanism of the European Commission. At the request of the EC, it provides targeted scientific evidence in a timely and transparent manner to inform the production of science advice by the Group of Chief Scientific Advisors while ensuring the highest scientific quality, developed by complete and independent evidence analysis and synthesis. SAPEA comprises six European Academy Networks: Academia Europaea, ALLEA, EASAC, Euro-CASE, FEAM and YASAS. It contributes to widening participation by mobilising its network of around 120 academies from different countries across Europe, each with hundreds of Fellows. SAPEA aims to strengthen the links between European science academies and to ensure their active participation in its activities. SAPEA assembles interdisciplinary working groups of scientific experts. The working groups produce Evidence Review Reports or other scientific inputs for the Advisors. SAPEA organises an inclusive dialogue about major societal challenges. These activities contribute to increasing awareness of the significance of science advice for policy and to improving transparency of the EU policy-making process. Background information Advanced materials are considered strategic to the EU's competitiveness and are of growing and essential importance to EU industry. The Scientific Advice Mechanism, as detailed in this scoping paper, has been asked to advise on how these materials can add impetus to EU strategic autonomy and how to promote innovation based on their outstanding performance. As part of this process, SAPEA was requested to deliver an Evidence Review Report on the topic no later than November 2025 , to be published along with the full opinion by the Group of Chief Scientific Advisors by January 202 6. 2 The Working Group meetings are expected to take place between May and November 2025. An additional workshop with stakeholders across the industry and innovation value chain will also feed the evidence-gathering process. As part of SAPEA Quality Assurance procedures, an Expert review workshop and peer-review process also take place within this timeframe.

Description of activities We are looking for a scientific writer to support our expert working group’s preparation of an evidence review report on advanced materials. The work is divided into two main tasks: 1. Scientific writing of evidence review report on advanced materials (approx. 25-30 days) - Write, and support the working group in writing, an evidence review report for the topic ‘Advanced Materials’, including references, based on the discussion of a working group, additional workshop with stakeholders across the value chain, and literature reviews provided. - Attend about 6 working group meetings and any other meetings required. Most meetings will be conducted online, with some in-person meetings possible, requiring travel within Europe. - Exchange with Euro-CASE and SAPEA staff and working group members in order to best reflect the scientific evidence provided by the experts. - Provide upon request and in a timely manner up-to-date drafts of the evidence review report during the period of the contract. - Adapt the text of the evidence review report after any observations and comments from the peer reviewers have been assessed by the working group members. - Draft an Executive Summary for the report, if requested by the Chair and in collaboration with the Chair or other experts in the Working Group. - Perform editorial work on the evidence review report, including harmonising the language between all chapters, copy editing and proof reading, re-formulating sentences that need to be clarified. - Deliver the final text by November 2025 . - If necessary and after discussion and agreement between parties, to perform other tasks in relation to the production of the report or ahead of the publication. 2. Summary report of industry and innovation workshop (approx. 3-5 days) - Write a report to summarise the discussion and key messages of a cross-sectoral workshop on the industry and innovation chain for advanced materials. The report extension is estimated to 30-50 pages. 3 - Attend the workshop (online, 4 June 2025) and a debrief meeting with the Working Group afterwards. - Exchange with Euro-CASE and SAPEA staff and working group members in order to best reflect the discussion provided during the workshop, and provide drafts as needed. - Deliver the final product within 2 weeks (by mid-June).

Profile and skills Excellent communication skills demonstrated through scientific writing experience for a range of audiences (essential). High level of English (fluent or bi-lingual equivalent) and excellent writing skills (essential). Minimum master’s degree in materials science related fields (required); knowledge of advanced materials, industry and innovation chain (desirable). Equipped with own IT tools for remote work (required). Availability to attend meetings and deliver intermediate drafts between meetings throughout the commitment period (required). Responsivity and collaborative skills (required).

Contract details Commitment: approximately 30-35 days anticipated between May – December 2025. Daily rate: 450 eur after tax (negotiable) Travel costs for possible in-person meetings will be reimbursed in accordance with Euro-CASE travel policies. Time zones and in-person meetings will be in Europe.
