TheInternational Potato Center (CIP) seeks to recruit a dynamic Scientist for theWest Bengal Project: ‘Developing local Seed Potato Production System in WestBengal’ funded Government of West Bengal.

The project aims to support early generation andcommercial seed potato production in West Bengal by building local capacitywithin the public and private sector to supply adequate amounts of quality seedof in-demand and locally adapted varieties that meet the main market segment,while supporting smallholder farmers in maximizing their investments in seedthrough building capacity in on-farm seed quality management, good agriculturalpractices for improving soil health and fertility.

Location - 50% Mohit Nagar, 50% Kolkata

Requirements

· As a Scientist, you will be responsible forthe overall project implementation in West Bengal to achieve the set goalsfor the project. You will ensure capacity building of public and privatesector on early generation seed production, promote good agriculturalpractices to ensure availability of suitable quality planting material toachieve greater seed potato security (supply, access, and use ofbetter-quality seed potato, including new varieties) for the partners in WestBengal. You will report to the project PI for project technical matters.

· Learn the project proposal to fullyunderstand and internalize the entire project mission and be ready tocontribute as an important member of the team towards meeting the set goalsat scale in an effective, sustainable, and cost-effective manner.

· Developand maintain plans to support the project including analyses of task,schedules and resources needed.

· Underthe guidance of your supervisor, you will develop a detailed work plan foryourself and team and diligently implement it to achieve the set goals andtargets by identifying, enrolling, handholding and monitoring suitableproject partners for various activities in the potato value chain.

· Liaise with your supervisor to ensure thatactivities are completed on time within budget and meet quality standardwhich will include developing and implementing plans for monitoring projectprogress as well as scheduling project meetings.

· Oversee day-to-day management andimplementation of the project activities in close collaboration withGovernment of West Bengal Scientists and project partners.

· Facilitate theimplementation of project activities in the project area and participate inthe monitoring of progress made towards achieving project set goals andoutputs.

· Provide support topublic and private sector partners and ensure that they are fully andactively engaged.

· Establish andmaintain good working relationships with government extension service,research stations, NGO partners, and farmer groups.

· In closeconsultation and collaboration with the Government of West Bengal Scientiststeams ensure that capacity is developed in all needed areas for variousstakeholders within the value chain.

· Ensure thatquarterly and annual consolidated technical and financial project reports areprepared and submitted to the program management office on schedule.

· Present theactivities, results, impacts and outcomes of the project at professional,donor and other stakeholders’ meetings.

· Document lessonslearned and best practices on the project development, implementation, andoversight activities.

· Carry out any otherduties as may be assigned by the supervisor to meet the objectives of thevalue chain.

· Capacity buildingof public and private partners on early generation seed potato production tofield multiplication and bulking using apical rooted cuttings technology

· Demonstration andtraining of potato on-farm seed management, soil fertility and other keyagronomic practices and innovations through innovation sites

· Field bulking,testing, and identification of candidate varieties for national registration

· Providing technicalassistance to the national program, when requested and within the limits ofavailable resources, in disease detection for seed certification schemes, intissue culture for early generation seed production

· Development andadvocacy for locally adapted protocols and schemes for seed quality assuranceto the federal and state level agency

· Design andimplement wide-scale farmer extension materials, briefs, scripts for cartoonsand videos, including through innovative use of ICTs platform.

Education:

· PhD level degree is in Agriculture and agricultural relatedfields, plus 4 years of postdoctoral level experience with solid publicationsin impact factors higher than 2.

Experience:

·The prospective candidate must possess a minimum of eight years’ work experience in Project coordination, implementation, and management. ·Demonstrated ability to write, publish, and disseminate technical reports, success stories, and promotional materials.·At least six years of practical experience on potato seed system, good agricultural practices, seed storage, potato pest and diseases.

Education:
