A leading engineering school in the Basque Country is seeking an Associate Professor in Turbomachinery. The role involves defining a research agenda, leading projects, and shaping the curriculum. Candidates must hold a Ph.D. and have significant research experience. Responsibilities also include teaching and collaborating with industry. This position offers a dynamic academic and research environment.
About ESTIA, Estia-Recherche and Technology Platforms
ESTIA (Graduate School of Advanced Industrial Technologies) is structured around three core missions: education, research and technology transfer, and entrepreneurship, supported by its technology park. The school trains versatile, trilingual engineers in fields such as energy, embedded systems, mechanics, computer science, organizational management, and industrial engineering. Affiliated with the University of Bordeaux, ESTIA is a member of the Conférence des Grandes Écoles and holds accreditation from the Commission des Titres de l’Ingénieur (CTI). Its academic offering includes a CTI-accredited Bachelor of Technology, an Engineering Preparatory Cycle, and several specialized Master’s programs.
In alignment with its educational mission, ESTIA fosters innovation through its multidisciplinary research laboratory,ESTIA Recherche , which coordinates national and European projects in close collaboration with industry. The laboratory conducts both fundamental and applied research, and offers expertise and consulting services. Research chairs established within ESTIA support strong and lasting partnerships between academia and industry.
To support these activities, ESTIA operates and utilizes several technology platforms:COMPOSITADOUR (Composite materials),ADDIMADOUR (Metal additive manufacturing),TURBOLAB (Innovative aeronautical propulsion).
Turbolab and TMACH4.0
In 2023, ESTIA createdTURBOLAB , a new technology platform in collaboration withAKIRA Technologies. This platform aims to foster research and industrial collaborations focused on the development and qualification of new turbomachinery technologies, contributing to the decarbonization of energy production.
The mission of theTMACH 4.0 joint laboratory is part of a long-term research initiative, centered on exploring the potential of innovative manufacturing processes — such as metal additive manufacturing and the use of composite materials — in the design of new architectures for turbomachinery components.
Profile
They will be affiliated with the ESTIA-Recherche department and will report directly to the Director of Research. They will work closely with the head of the TURBOLAB platform and the TMACH 4.0 Labcom leader.
They must hold a Ph.D. in one of the following fields: turbomachinery, materials mechanics, structural dynamics, vibrations, or fluid mechanics. Significant research experience is expected, ideally supported by an HDR (Habilitation to Supervise Research).
Prior experience in leading a research team, developing an original scientific theme, supervising Ph.D. students, submitting research project proposals, and collaborating with both academic and industrial partners is also required.
Research Activities
The mission assigned to the candidate will focus on developing the scientific themes of the TMACH 4.0 Labcom.
It will take place within a multidisciplinary team with expertise in simulation, materials, and manufacturing processes. The candidate will contribute to mobilizing and coordinating these areas of expertise to support the development of new architectures for turbomachinery components.
They will have the freedom to define their own research agenda, in line with the objectives of the TMACH 4.0 Labcom, and will play a central role in integrating and coordinating research activities in this field.
In the longer term, the candidate will be expected to develop an original research theme aligned with the project’s ambitions and to lead collaborative projects at the regional, national, and international levels.
Teaching Activities
The recruited candidate will be responsible for structuring ESTIA’s teaching activities in the field of Turbomachinery (engineering cycle, preparatory cycle, specialized master’s programs).
They may also contribute to teaching in the field of mechanics and be involved in proposing and creating new programs, both in initial training and continuing education.
