ABOUT ASARI

The African Sustainable Agriculture Research Institute (ASARI) is a component of Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P). It is located in Laayoune City and focuses on practical-based research to address local, regional, and African agricultural challenges using current science and technology.

Connected with a network of universities and research centers across Africa, ASARI links real field issues with scientific research. The institute comprises a multidisciplinary team including agronomists, biochemists, molecular biologists, bioprocess specialists, and animal scientists, responding to regional challenges affecting marginal environments.

ASARI has three main research programs:

  • AgriBioTechnology: focuses on plant/crop improvement, biosaline agriculture, resource valorization, and animal nutrition and reproduction to positively impact African agriculture.
  • Water treatment and management: develops cost-effective desalination and water treatment technologies for agriculture.
  • Renewable energy: aims to develop new approaches for producing clean energy addressing local and regional challenges.
JOB SUMMARY

ASARI seeks applications for a full-time Professor in agricultural water and irrigation management. The candidate will conduct research, develop proposals, and publish on topics like water management, irrigation solutions, soil-water-plant interactions, crop modeling, and best practices to improve water efficiency in arid and marginal zones.

The candidate will also develop teaching modules on agricultural water and irrigation management and deliver related courses.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Support research in agricultural water management, including fieldwork, land and irrigation mapping, data analysis, and report writing.
  • Lead data collection and situational analyses to inform water and irrigation solutions.
  • Lead project activities across Morocco and Africa, collaborating with local partners.
  • Support and collaborate with other researchers at ASARI and partner institutions.
  • Organize and facilitate teaching, capacity building, and training activities.
  • Conduct reviews, meta-analyses, and produce peer-reviewed publications.
  • Assist in preparing communication materials and outreach activities.
  • Design simulation studies using modeling tools.
  • Analyze data, interpret results, prepare presentations, and publish findings.
  • Develop research projects and grant proposals.
  • Supervise students and interns.
  • Manage project budgets, materials, and staff.

The candidate will maintain laboratory and field equipment, order supplies, and maintain research records. Frequent travel within Morocco and Africa is expected. Collaboration with other researchers at UM6P and beyond is also required.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
  • Ph.D. in agricultural sciences, irrigation sciences, agronomy, water management, or related fields.
  • Confirmed field experience.
  • Research experience in on-station, on-farm, greenhouse, and lab settings related to irrigation, salinity, and agronomy.
  • Expertise in irrigation, water management, desert environments, water-crop-soil modeling, and water use efficiency (indicate in cover letter).
  • Proficiency in statistical analysis and visualization tools (R, SAS, etc.) and Microsoft Office.
  • Publication record in reputable journals.
  • Experience working in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Excellent English communication skills.
  • Knowledge of project and database management.
  • Additional language skills in Arabic and French are desirable.
  • Experience in grant writing and proposal development.
  • Supervisory experience.
