ABOUT ASARI

The African Sustainable Agriculture Research Institute (ASARI) is a component of Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P). Located in Laayoune City, it is a structure of practical-based research aimed at solving real local, regional, and African agricultural challenges using up-to-date science and technology.

Oriented towards Africa, ASARI collaborates with a wide network of universities and research centers to connect real field issues with current science. The institute has a multidisciplinary team of experts responding to regional challenges affecting marginal environments.

ASARI's main research programs include:

  • AgriBioTechnology: Leveraging up-to-date technologies for plant/crop improvement, biosaline agriculture, valorization of local resources, and animal nutrition and reproduction.
  • Water treatment and management: Developing cost-effective desalination and water treatment processes.
  • Renewable energy: Developing approaches for clean energy production to address local and regional challenges.
JOB SUMMARY

ASARI seeks a PhD holder in agricultural economics to join our team of agronomists. The candidate will conduct research, develop proposals, and write reports on social and economic issues related to desert and arid land agriculture, water and soil sustainability, and market questions. Tasks include data analysis, surveys, and simulations using agro-economic models.

The candidate will contribute to social and economic analyses in ongoing projects at UM6P Laayoune, with fieldwork involving farmers, especially marginalized groups. The focus will be on the value chain from farm to fork, emphasizing marketing activities.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Develop and lead research projects related to agricultural economics and sustainability.
  • Conduct literature reviews, surveys, and data analysis.
  • Perform market and economic feasibility analyses.
  • Generate policy recommendations and briefs.
  • Present findings at conferences and to stakeholders.
  • Enhance data quality for international publication.
  • Assist in developing technical reports, extension materials, and policy briefs.
  • Run simulations with agro-economic models.
  • Develop training programs.
  • Support departmental services and maintain research equipment.
  • Travel regionally and internationally as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
  • PhD in Agricultural Economics or Economics.
  • Recognized experience in the field.
  • Expertise in areas such as agricultural production economics, cost-benefit analysis, market analysis, gender and rural development, water valuation, climate resilience.
  • Good publication record.
  • Fluency in English; French and Arabic are a plus.
  • Teamwork and grant writing skills.
  • Knowledge of statistics and databases.
  • Supervisory experience is desirable.
