Job summary

Metso is seeking a Senior AI Engineer to join the AI Enablement team in the Business Growth function. Based in Espoo or Tampere, Finland, with hybrid options, you will help translate AI strategy into secure, scalable production solutions and mentor teams across Metso.

You will report to the Head of AI Enablement and work closely with security, governance, and data teams to build reusable capabilities that scale enterprise-wide.

Qualifications

• 5-10 years of experience in software engineering, solution architecture, cloud platforms or related technical leadership.
• Track record shipping AI-enabled solutions into production, combining LLMs, RAG, embeddings and data pipelines.
• Experience with MLOps, observability, cost and latency optimization, and reliability monitoring.
• Hands-on cloud-native development with Azure preferred; AWS/GCP also valuable.

Introduction

We are looking for a Senior AI Engineer to join our AI Enablement team within the Business Growth function. Metso is moving from separate AI experiments toward coordinated enterprise delivery, and this role is key to making that shift real. You will help translate Metso's enterprise AI strategy and operating model into secure, scalable and production-grade solutions that improve how Metso operates, supports employees and serves customers. You will act as a senior technical anchor for practical AI delivery, reusable engineering patterns and long-term internal capability building. You will report to the Head of AI Enablement. This role is based in Espoo or Tampere, Finland, with hybrid working options available. Because the work involves close cooperation with the wider AI transformation agenda and senior stakeholders, regular presence at our Espoo hub is expected.

Team you will belong to

You will join a lean, high-impact AI Enablement team that helps Metso put AI into practice and scale what works. The team works at the center of Metso's AI transformation agenda, supporting the enterprise AI operating model and connecting business areas, corporate functions, IT, data and digital teams around shared priorities, platforms, architecture principles and engineering standards. Metso uses a distributed AI model, so developers and engineers work close to the business; our team provides senior technical direction, reusable capabilities and specialist support so solutions can move from pilots to sustainable enterprise use. You will be the senior technical anchor who helps teams define solvable problems, make sound architecture choices, avoid fragmented solutions and build reusable capabilities that can scale across Metso. We collaborate closely with business and IT owners, data and application architects, security, governance stakeholders and Metso's wider data and AI community, with ways of working built on getting things done together, continuous learning and accountability.

What You'll Do

• Own the technical design and delivery of selected high-impact AI solutions from discovery through production, adoption and continuous improvement.
• Partner with business and functional stakeholders to identify the core problem behind AI opportunities and define it in a way that can be solved, implemented, measured and scaled.
• Translate enterprise AI priorities into scalable technical solutions, reusable accelerators, reference architectures and delivery practices that distributed teams across Metso can adopt.
• Design scalable end-to-end AI solution architectures covering agents, applications, integrations, data flows, APIs, backend systems, security controls and human-in-the-loop processes.
• Define how AI solutions are evaluated, monitored and improved over time, including quality, safety, cost, latency, reliability, user adoption and business impact.
• Help teams make pragmatic technology choices across foundation models, RAG patterns, agent frameworks, enterprise platforms, classical machine learning, automation and conventional software approaches.
• Drive lighthouse enterprise AI initiatives while managing architectural dependencies, technical trade-offs, scalability considerations, security requirements and delivery risks.
• Facilitate solution design discussions across business, IT, architecture, security and data stakeholders, while mentoring engineers and specialists and strengthening Metso's internal AI engineering capability.

What You'll Bring

• Strong technical foundation in software engineering, cloud architecture, applied AI, platform engineering or enterprise solution architecture, with the ability to design reliable systems that operate in production environments.
• 5-10 years of experience in software engineering, solution architecture, cloud platforms, data and AI engineering, platform engineering, enterprise technology consulting, or related technical leadership roles, with demonstrated responsibility for designing, delivering and operating production-grade systems in large enterprise corporations and complex business environments.
• A track record of shipping AI-enabled solutions into production - combining LLMs, RAG, embeddings, vector databases, agentic patterns, workflow orchestration, classical ML or conventional software and data pipelines - not just building proofs of concept.
• Experience with modern AI engineering practices such as evaluation, observability, prompt and version management, LLMOps/MLOps, cost and latency optimization, reliability monitoring or continuous improvement of deployed AI systems.
• Hands-on cloud-native development and architecture experience; Azure is strongly preferred though AWS or GCP experience is also valuable. Experience with APIs, microservices, CI/CD and enterprise integration is important.
• Systems and process thinking: you can uncover root causes, simplify complex problem spaces, and reason end to end across business processes, software architecture, data, AI agents, integrations and user adoption.
• The credibility and judgement to act as a trusted internal AI architecture advisor: listen carefully, ask insightful follow-up questions, challenge solution ideas constructively, and translate between business goals and technical choices.
• Ability to balance innovation with enterprise realities such as build-versus-buy decisions, integration complexity, maintainability, cost, performance, responsible AI, data privacy, security and compliance.
• Experience raising engineering quality through design reviews, reference architectures, documentation, mentoring, pragmatic standards and collaboration across distributed teams.
• Experience with enterprise data platforms, ERP/CRM integration, Microsoft Fabric, Snowflake, Microsoft low-code tooling, S/4HANA, optimization, computer vision or industrial and B2B technology environments (nice to have).
