Job summary

VTT is seeking a Research Scientist to join the Photonics and RF Integration team in Oulu. You will advance integration and packaging technologies for photonics, quantum, and microelectronic devices, partnering with colleagues, customers, and partners to drive research, prototyping, and pilot manufacturing activities.

Responsibilities include planning experiments, communicating results, and potentially managing small R&D projects.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in a relevant field (photonics, electronics, quantum technology, physics) or equivalent experience.
• Experience or strong interest in photonic devices and their integration technologies.
• Fluency in English and ability to communicate research results clearly.

We are now looking for a Research Scientist to join our Photonics and RF Integration team in Oulu.

In this role, you will advance and apply integration and packaging technologies for photonics, quantum and microelectronic devices. Working closely with VTT colleagues, customers and research partners, you will contribute to research, prototyping and pilot manufacturing activities, communicate results, and help build new research and customer projects. Depending on your interests and experience, you may also manage smaller R&D projects.

Our Photonics and RF Integration team develops advanced components and modules by combining photonic and electronic devices with cutting‑edge packaging and assembly technologies. We work across disciplines including photonics, high‑frequency electronics, precision assembly and system integration to create innovative solutions for future applications. VTT is a research and manufacturing partner for communications, defence, space, medical and quantum technologies, and supports companies with advanced design and manufacturing infrastructure.

As a Research Scientist, you will:

• Contribute to R&D on photonics and quantum device integration technologies together with design and manufacturing experts.
• Design integration and packaging concepts and/or develop and carry out assembly processes and related characterisation tasks, depending on your strengths and interests.
• Plan and execute assembly, packaging and testing experiments, analyse results and solve technical challenges.
• Communicate research plans and results in meetings, reports and presentations.
• Publish scientific results in journals and conference proceedings.
• Support the preparation of new research and customer projects.
• Manage small R&D projects, depending on your interests.

Who we are looking for:

• You have experience or a strong interest in photonic devices and their integration technologies.
• Experience in device packaging, assembly processes, high‑frequency electronics or quantum technologies is highly valued.
• Knowledge of microelectronics, semiconductors, optoelectronics, electronics manufacturing, microsystems, thermal management, cleanroom processes or project management is considered an asset.
• You have a master’s degree, preferably a doctorate, in photonics, electronics, quantum technology, physics or a related field.
• You communicate fluently in English.
