Job summary

Mapbox is seeking a seasoned Machine Learning Engineer III to lead the Routing Cost team, building and optimizing high-traffic ML pipelines and geospatial data processing. You will guide engineers, mentor colleagues, and collaborate with data scientists to improve models determining movement and traffic patterns.

This role emphasizes ownership, software craftsmanship, and a customer-focused mindset, with on-call responsibilities to ensure 24/7 availability of routing services.

Qualifications

• 8-10+ years of backend and ML experience.
• Python and distributed processing with Hadoop, Spark, Airflow, and Dask.
• Cloud experience with infrastructure services and deployment.
• Strong focus on code quality and scalable architecture.
• Ownership and execution mindset with customer focus.
• Mentorship and team leadership experience.
• Excellent written and verbal communication; cross-functional collaboration.
• Data-informed decision making and fast decision instincts.

Responsibilities

• Lead engineering teams to deliver end-to-end feature implementations within the navigation group.
• Design and build new ML and data pipelines; optimize existing ones.
• Create tools for automated quality assurance and data exploration.
• Apply geospatial algorithms to optimize pipelines and implement tuning/outlier detection.
• Collaborate with data scientists to improve movement/traffic models.
• Mentor colleagues and participate in design/code reviews.
• Participate in on-call rotation to keep services available 24/7.
