Are you ready to lead the team behind the driver experience at Europe's fastest-growing EV charging platform? We're looking for an Engineering Manager for our eMSP & Driver Services team — the people who make charging effortless for millions of drivers. This is a role for someone who builds great teams first and great software through them.
About Us
Virta is Europe's fastest-growing electric vehicle charging platform, operating in 36+ countries with 600,000+ charging stations. Headquartered in Helsinki, with offices in Berlin, Stockholm, Paris, Singapore, and Bucharest, we're shaping the future of e-mobility with a talented, multinational team. Virta is among the rare 65 companies that made the FT 1000 list four consecutive times.
The Role
As Engineering Manager for eMSP & Driver Services, you'll lead a team of nine engineers building everything a driver touches: our native iOS and Android apps, the white-label applications our eMSP customers run under their own brands, payments and billing — including payment terminal integrations for our customers — RFID and driver management, and roaming across charging networks. You'll own the team's delivery, health, and growth — partnering closely with Product to turn roadmaps into shipped, reliable software. This is a people leadership role with technical substance: you won't write production code daily, but you'll be expected to engage credibly in architecture and design discussions in a domain where reliability and user trust are everything.
What You'll Do
- Lead and grow the team: Coach nine engineers across mobile and backend disciplines, run meaningful 1:1s, and drive career development through our structured competency framework.
- Own delivery: Plan and prioritize with Product, set realistic commitments, and build a track record of predictable execution — using evidence, not optimism.
- Own quality and operations: Your team runs what it builds. Drive production ownership, incident response readiness, and a healthy approach to L3 support.
- Safeguard the platform: Develop systems and controls that protect customers, transactions, and business operations against fraud, misuse, and emerging threats.
- Drive modernization: Lead your team through our ongoing decomposition from a PHP monolith toward domain-oriented TypeScript/NestJS services — balancing delivery with technical renewal.
- Hire and shape the team: Recruit, onboard, and make the performance calls — including the difficult ones — that keep the bar high.
- Partner across the organization: Collaborate with Product, Design, other engineering teams, and the commercial teams behind our white-label eMSP offering to keep the driver experience coherent end to end.
What We're Looking For
- Proven experience as an Engineering Manager leading a product engineering team — hiring, developing, and managing performance of software engineers.
- A software engineering background with enough technical depth to challenge and support design decisions, review trade-offs, and earn the team's trust.
- A track record of predictable delivery in an agile environment — planning grounded in data, honest expectation-setting with stakeholders.
- Experience leading teams that build consumer-facing products — mobile applications, payments, or similar — where reliability and user trust matter.
- Demonstrated ability to develop engineers: growing juniors into independent contributors and seniors into technical leaders.
- Excellent communication skills in English.
- Willingness to work onsite on a regular basis (hybrid working).
- Residency and working rights in Finland.
Nice to Have
- Experience in the EV charging, energy, mobility, or IoT sectors — familiarity with OCPI or roaming concepts is a plus.
- Hands-on background in native mobile development (iOS/Android), TypeScript/NestJS, PHP, or leading teams through legacy modernization.
- Experience with white-label or multi-tenant products, or payment systems at scale.
- Experience leading teams in a multinational, distributed organization.
- Experience in both e-commerce and POS payments.
Why Join Us
- Lead a team whose work is visible to millions of drivers across Europe.
- Real ownership — your team runs its services end to end, and your leadership directly shapes how they grow.
- A leadership culture that values honesty over hype: realistic commitments, evidence-based decisions, and direct communication.
- International, passionate team spread across our European offices and beyond.
- Hybrid work with autonomy and flexibility.
