Job summary

Brightsmith is seeking a Commissioning Manager to lead the commissioning of a major data centre in Kouvola, Finland. The role is a 12-month freelance contract with a rotational working pattern, coordinating with client, main contractor, MEP trades and vendors to ensure safe, efficient commissioning.

The successful candidate will drive pre-functional testing, IST, FPT and handover, manage commissioning teams, review test scripts and ITPs, and report progress and risks to the project management

Role Overview

• We are currently seeking an experienced Commissioning Manager to join a leading General Contractor on a major data centre project in Kouvola, Finland.
• This is a 12 month freelance contract, working on a rotational basis, with responsibility for managing and coordinating the commissioning process across the project.
• The successful candidate will work closely with the client, main contractor, MEP contractors and specialist vendors to ensure all systems are commissioned safely, efficiently and in accordance with project requirements.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and manage the overall commissioning process from pre-functional testing through to integrated systems testing and final handover.
• Develop, implement and maintain the project commissioning plan, programme, procedures and commissioning documentation.
• Coordinate commissioning activities across electrical, mechanical, controls/BMS and life-safety systems, ensuring interfaces between systems are fully tested.
• Manage and coordinate commissioning teams, specialist subcontractors, vendors and contractors to ensure commissioning activities remain on programme.
• Review commissioning documentation, including method statements, test scripts, check sheets, ITPs, functional performance tests and commissioning reports.
• Monitor progress against the commissioning programme and identify potential delays, technical issues and interface risks.
• Lead daily commissioning meetings and coordination sessions with contractors and project stakeholders.
• Ensure all commissioning activities are carried out in accordance with approved procedures, project specifications, design requirements and relevant industry standards.
• Manage the resolution of commissioning issues, defects and outstanding works through to close-out.
• Coordinate and witness Functional Performance Testing (FPT) and Integrated Systems Testing (IST).
• Ensure commissioning records, test results and handover documentation are complete, accurate and submitted in line with project requirements.
• Liaise with the client and project management team, providing regular updates on commissioning progress, risks and outstanding activities.
• Support the development and implementation of safe systems of work for commissioning activities.
• Ensure commissioning activities are carried out safely and in accordance with site HSE requirements.
• Provide technical leadership and mentoring to commissioning engineers and specialists working on the project.

Requirements

• Proven experience as a Commissioning Manager / Senior Commissioning Manager on large-scale data centre projects.
• Strong understanding of data centre MEP systems and commissioning processes.
• Experience managing commissioning activities from pre-commissioning through to IST and final handover.
• Strong knowledge of electrical and mechanical systems, with an understanding of BMS/controls and system interfaces.
• Experience working for a General contractor or Commissioning Agent, CxA or specialist commissioning consultancy is highly desirable.
• Strong understanding of commissioning documentation, test scripts, ITPs and functional performance testing.
• Experience coordinating multiple contractors, vendors and project stakeholders.
• Excellent communication, leadership and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work effectively within a fast-paced construction environment and manage competing priorities.
• Previous international data centre experience is highly advantageous.
• English language proficiency is essential.
• Relevant engineering, electrical, mechanical or commissioning qualifications are preferred.
