Job Description Summary
The Wind Turbine Controls Technical Leader is responsible for the turbine control software for various systems and components comprising a wind turbine. In this role, you will develop products, solutions, and technology for wind turbine and farm-level control components. You will execute business critical new product introductions, drive cost-out competitiveness, and develop technology to increase AEP and ensure world-class performance. This role requires deep expertise in control systems engineering, wind turbine technology, and project leadership to deliver reliable and efficient turbine performance.
Job Description
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Develop and lead a team of controls engineers, focused on application software development, from requirements to production release, through to post release support.
- Oversee the modeling, simulation, and analysis of wind turbine dynamics and control strategies to improve performance, reliability, and grid integration.
- Coordinate the integration of control hardware and software, including PLCs, SCADA, and remote monitoring systems.
- Support troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and resolution of control system issues encountered during turbine operation, commissioning, or testing.
- Ensure compliance with relevant standards, certifications, and customer requirements related to offshore wind turbine controls.
- Mentor and guide junior engineers and technicians; foster a culture of technical excellence and innovation.
- Stay abreast of emerging technologies, regulatory changes, and industry trends in wind turbine controls and offshore wind energy.
- Own and manage the flight board; drive cross-functional collaboration with systems teams to ensure effective prioritization and execution of key initiatives.
- Partner with stakeholders to drive corrective and preventive actions to deliver world-class quality for core control components.
- Provide leadership with high integrity and oversight of processes protecting intellectual property, export-controlled information, and strategic technology.
- Guide Scrum ceremonies such as Scrum calls, sprint planning, sprint closure, and retrospectives.
- Remove impediments to team progress and escalate issues when necessary.
- Foster a culture of collaboration, transparency, and continuous improvement within the organization.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
- Demonstrated experience (7+ years) in wind turbine controls engineering, with at least 3 years in a technical leadership role, preferably within offshore wind projects.
Desired Characteristics:
- Strong understanding of control theory, systems modeling, turbine dynamics, and grid integration.
- Proficiency in relevant programming languages (e.g., MATLAB/Simulink, Python, IEC 61131-3 PLC programming).
- Experience with wind energy SCADA, PLC, industrial automation systems and communication protocols, sensors, signal processing, modelling and simulation of physical systems and controller logic
- Familiarity with offshore wind industry standards and certification processes (optional)
- Strategic thinker with demonstrated ability to solve complex technical challenges
- Proven project management, leadership, and communication skills.
- Experience with Agile methodology and leading sprint planning
- Excellent communication skills and ability to articulate technical problems in clear and simple terms.
- Experience with Model-Based Design techniques and distributed control systems
- Proven ability to work effectively with international teams in a fast-paced environment.
