A leading company based in Madrid is seeking an experienced Legal Counsel to provide legal support for their national and international trading operations. The successful candidate will ensure compliance with relevant laws while offering strategic legal advice across various trading activities, including crude oil, biofuels, and more. Ideal candidates will bring 3-5 years of relevant experience, strong problem-solving skills, and fluency in both English and Spanish.

We are driving a transformative strategy agenda called “Positive Motion”, focused on greening our revenue sources and fostering sustainable growth. As part of this vision, we are looking for a highly skilled Legal Counsel to join our legal team in Madrid. This role will provide legal and regulatory support to our national and international trading operations, ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations. The successful candidate will work closely with various business units, offering strategic legal advice to support trading activities across crude oil, refined products, biofuels, marine fuels (bunker), natural gas, biomethane, electricity, CO2 certificates, and hedging & futures.

The responsibilities we’ll trust you with

  1. Provide legal and regulatory advice to all areas of the Trading business, both nationally and internationally, in alignment with the BU Trading / "Positive Motion" strategy.
  2. Draft, review, negotiate, and oversee legal documents essential for trading operations, including contracts, tenders, general terms and conditions, maritime law clauses, and other relevant agreements.
  3. Identify, analyze, and manage legal risks associated with trading operations and business proposals, offering proactive solutions.
  4. Support internal and external projects related to the Trading business.
  5. Provide legal assistance in claims, litigation, and arbitration processes involving external and internal counterparts, coordinating with internal teams and external law firms.
  6. Stay updated on relevant legislation, case law, market practices, and company regulations, ensuring compliance and dissemination of key legal updates.
  7. Collaborate with other departments (Legal & Assurance, Compliance, Tax, Finance, etc.) and other Group companies, ensuring effective coordination and cooperation.
  8. Identify and supervise port administrative concessions and other required authorizations for the Group’s trading activities in collaboration with internal legal and business teams.

What are we looking for?

Education : Bachelor's or master’s degree in law or related field.

Experience :

  • 3-5 years of experience in international contracting, preferably within the energy sector or related fields.
  • Prior experience in trading businesses or legal advisory roles within trading companies.
  • Understanding of the energy sector and trading markets, including financial instruments and derivatives.
  • Knowledge of maritime law and applicable national and international regulations.
  • Familiarity with port regulatory frameworks and administrative procedures at both national and international levels.

Languages : Fluency in English and Spanish is essential.

Strong coordination and communication skills, effective across countries, departments, and cultural contexts. Ability to manage multiple tasks with strong problem-solving skills. Versatile, multidisciplinary mindset, capable of handling varied legal and operational issues.
