Who are we?

The British Embassy in Madrid, Spain, is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas. We are looking to recruit a Trade and Investment Adviser for the Energy Transition team within Department for Business and Trade in Madrid.

Main purpose of job :

The Trade & Investment Adviser will play a key role within the Energy Transition team, supporting UK companies in the energy sector in Spain and Spanish investment in the UK, assisting Line Manager with all related activities and events, and contributing to team targets and objectives as set out in the Country Business Plan.

Roles and responsibilities :

  1. Support delivery of all trade and investment promotion work in the Renewables and Energy Transition team within DBT Spain as outlined in the Country Business Plan.
  2. Engage with UK exporters and UK businesses present in the Spanish market to support their growth, identifying new leads and exploring further opportunities across energy subsectors.
  3. Assist Line Manager to manage key accounts and support new and existing Spanish investors in the UK energy sector.
  4. Keep accurate, up-to-date records of company outreach and Energy team performance against objectives.
  5. Prepare sector reports and analysis on relevant areas for UK and Spain (e.g. electrical networks, offshore / onshore wind, solar, hydrogen).
  6. Build strong network of relevant contacts both internally (e.g. DBT, FCDO) and externally within business, sector organisations and industry bodies.

Essential qualifications, skills and experience :

  • Full professional proficiency in Spanish and English (written and spoken, minimum of C2 level for CEFR framework);
  • Minimum 1 year of experience working in trade or investment promotion or business development in an international business environment;
  • Minimum BA degree in relevant field (e.g. Business, Environmental studies, Economics);
  • Ability to research and analyse information, and prepare comprehensive reports;
  • Strong communication skills, customer focus and ability to work under pressure and respond to changes in priorities / objectives;
  • Ability to work independently and use own initiative;
  • Technology savvy and familiarity with standard MS software (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, etc);

Availability to travel.

Desirable qualifications, skills and experience :

  • Knowledge of the energy sector and environmental issues, with a particular focus on renewables, in the UK and / or Spain;
  • Interest in the UK and Spain’s climate and energy transition policies and regulations;
  • Experience in building and maintaining successful working relationships and delivering projects or events;
  • Existing network of contacts in the energy sector in the UK and / or Spain;
  • Expertise in using social media for business purposes, and in use of MS Teams.

Other benefits and conditions of employment :

This is a full-time, permanent contract at AO grade level, based in Madrid. Normal working hours are 37.5 per week. The British Embassy Madrid supports and promotes flexible working as a crucial part of our inclusive offering.

The successful candidate is subject to a confirmation of a background check, security clearance and the successful completion of a probationary period.

The successful candidate will be enrolled in the Spanish Social Security Scheme and will therefore not be entitled to any gratuity from the Embassy based on gross annual salary.

The Embassy is a Diplomatic Mission with tax exempt status and does not collect taxes for other States. Employees are fully responsible for payment of income tax at the legally required rate. Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Spain are subject to terms and conditions of service according to local Spanish employment law.

Visa / work permit requirements : Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Spain and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.
