The British Consulate-General in Barcelona is part of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office’s (FCDO) worldwide network of 270 Posts, representing British political, military, economic, and consular interests overseas. It is now recruiting for a Trade and investment Advisor for the Department for Business and Trade (DBT).
The selected Trade & Investment Advisor will play a key role in supporting the UK’s Department for Business and Trade (DBT) in Barcelona, Spain, with a primary focus on the clean energy, technology, and biotechnology sectors.
This position offers a unique opportunity to work in a dynamic, international environment, gaining hands-on experience in trade and foreign direct investment promotion. The role offers significant exposure to event coordination, stakeholder engagement, market research, business reporting, and digital communications.
The advisor will contribute to strengthening bilateral commercial ties, helping UK businesses explore opportunities in Spain’s economy, aiding Spanish companies to establish their business in the UK, while also highlighting Spain as an investment destination for UK firms.

The Trade & Investment Advisor will contribute to the successful delivery of DBT Spain’s commercial objectives by supporting sector leads in identifying business opportunities, facilitating trade and investment partnerships, and promoting UK capabilities in clean energy and technology.
On a day-to-day basis, the advisor will assist in organizing and delivering sector-specific events, trade missions, and networking activities; maintain and update databases of key stakeholders; conduct market research and prepare briefings or reports; and support social media and communications efforts to raise the profile of UK businesses in Spain.
The role also involves liaising with UK companies to understand their needs, helping them navigate the Spanish market, and supporting Spanish companies with plans to invest in the UK. Success in this role will be measured by the quality of support provided, the smooth execution of events and campaigns, and the advisor’s ability to build productive relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

This is a full-time 6-month fixed term contract at AO grade level. Normal working hours are 37.5 per week. The British Consulate-General in Barcelona supports and promotes flexible working as a crucial part of our inclusive offering.
The successful candidate is subject to a confirmation of a background check, security clearance and the successful completion of a probationary period.
The successful candidate will be enrolled in the Spanish Social Security Scheme and will therefore not be entitled to any gratuity from the Embassy based on gross annual salary.
The Embassy is a Diplomatic Mission with tax exempt status and does not collect taxes for other States. Employees are fully responsible for payment of income tax at the legally required rate. Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Spain are subject to terms and conditions of service according to local Spanish employment law.
Visa / work permit requirements : Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Spain and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.
