The Institute of Chemical Research of Catalonia (ICIQ) is seeking a Technician for the Mechanical Workshop to support research groups with design, prototyping and maintenance of mechanical setups.

The successful candidate will design components using Solid Works, fabricate parts with additive manufacturing and traditional machining, assemble experimental rigs and repair lab equipment, while keeping the workshop organized and safe in a dynamic, international environment.

The Institute of Chemical Research of Catalonia (ICIQ) is seeking a Technician to work in the Mechanical Workshop, within the Scientific Core Facilities.

ICIQ is one of the world's internationally recognized leading institutions in the field of chemistry committed to solving major social and economic challenges by conducting top quality research in three main areas: Sustainable Catalysis, Renewable Energy and Health. The successful candidate will join ICIQ's Mechanical Workshop, which provides technical support to ICIQ research groups and external users through the design, prototyping, fabrication, assembly, maintenance and repair of mechanical components and customized experimental setups. The Mechanical Workshop works closely with researchers to transform technical and scientific needs into practical solutions. Its activities include conventional machining and additive manufacturing using a range of materials, such as SS, Teflon, aluminum, polymers…) as well as the assembly of customized setups. Besides this, the mechanical workshop also provides technical support for the maintenance, repair and improvement of small laboratory equipment.

This position offers the opportunity to work in a highly research-oriented environment where problem-solving, creativity and hands-on technical skills are key.

The development of these tasks results in the following capacities:

Prototyping.
Assembling of new singular on purpose designed measurement devices or reaction setups.
Repairing and improving commercial devices.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

• Designing mechanical components, prototypes and setups using Solid Works software.
• Fabricate new pieces using both techniques: additive fabrication & mechanization.
• Design and assembly of experimental setups.
• Small laboratory equipment repairs, modifications and improvements.
• Organization of the workshop: inventory, cleanliness & tidiness, purchase orders, etc.
• Operating and supporting different 3D printing technologies, including FDM, SLS and resin-based printing.

Requirements:

• Technical education or vocational training in mechanical manufacturing, machining, mechatronics, industrial design or a related technical field.
• Knowledge of Solid Works.
• Knowledge of 3D printing and additive manufacturing technologies (SLS, FDM and resin).
• Knowledge and practical experience using workshop tools and accessories.
• A proactive, creative and curious approach to technical challenges.
• Technical problem-solving skills.
• Ability to interpret technical requirements and translate them into practical mechanical solutions.
• Good English level.

Valued qualities:

• Knowledge of lathe and milling machine operation.
• Knowledge of different materials and their suitability for machining, additive manufacturing and laboratory applications.
• Experience designing and assembling experimental, scientific or laboratory setups.
• Experience in the maintenance, troubleshooting or repair of laboratory equipment.
• Good interpersonal and communication skills.
• Organized person.
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Selection Process

ICIQ's selection process usually entail the following phases:

• Pre-selection: The pre-selection process will be based on qualifications and expertise as reflected on the candidates' CVs.
• Interview & practical exercise: Preselected candidates will be interviewed by the Hiring Manager of the position and the appointed Selection Committee.
• Offer Letter: Once the successful candidate is selected, the People Unit will extend a Job Offer, specifying the start day, salary and overall job conditions.

A Human Resources Unit representative will participate in the interviews to ensure procedural correctness and compliance with OTM R principles, without forming part of the Selection Committee.

The evaluation committee will perform the assessment ensuring the absence of conflict of interest with any of the candidates and will sign a Declaration of Absence of Conflict of Interest (DACI) to that end. In case a conflict of interest arises, the evaluator will be substituted by a different evaluator with similar expertise.
