We are seeking an experienced WordPress Tech Lead with a strong back-end focus and a proven track record in designing scalable architecture, building custom plugins, and leading enterprise-level WordPress implementations.

The ideal candidate will have expertise in platform architecture and a strong interest in headless WordPress implementations, as well as proficiency with GraphQL and REST APIs.

We need an independent problem-solver who is also a collaborative leader, capable of making informed technical decisions and effectively representing engineering perspectives in cross-functional discussions.

As part of our digital transformation, our client is migrating multiple brands to WordPress, and this role will be vital in enhancing the platform post-launch.

Requirements

• 7+ years of experience in WordPress and PHP, backed by a strong portfolio of complex and large-scale projects.
• Proven experience designing scalable, fault-tolerant back-end systems within WordPress, including developing custom plugins and services that support high-traffic applications.
• Deep understanding of RESTful APIs and familiarity with GraphQL APIs.
• Experience implementing headless or decoupled WordPress architectures.
• Prior experience supporting high-traffic enterprise websites.
• Strong debugging skills, performance optimization, and proficiency in local development workflows.
• Hands-on experience with testing frameworks in WordPress, such as PHPUnit.
• Experience with version control systems such as Git and GitHub.
• Comfortable working in fast-paced, product-driven environments with rapidly changing priorities and evolving requirements.
• Strong communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate technical concepts to clients and team members.
• At least Upper-Intermediate English level.
• Be able to align with US Eastern Time (EST).

Nice To Have Skills

• Hands-on experience with WordPress VIP hosting infrastructure.
• Skilled in managing and developing WordPress multisite setups.
• Proven experience implementing modern CI / CD pipelines and deployment workflows.
• Exposure to AWS cloud services and contemporary infrastructure tools.
• Active contributions to the WordPress community through open-source projects and industry events.
• Experience working in the digital media and publishing sectors.
• Familiarity with front-end frameworks such as React, Next.js, and TypeScript.

Responsibilities

• Take ownership of the technical vision for the client’s WordPress platform, overseeing the development and rollout of new features in partnership with both internal teams and external collaborators.
• Design and evolve the platform's architecture and back-end infrastructure to ensure stability, scalability, and adaptability.
• Uphold high coding standards focusing on performance, security, and scalability best practices.
• Collaborate with designers, front-end developers, and product managers to plan, prioritize, and execute development initiatives.
• Provide technical advice and mentorship to internal engineers, fostering growth in WordPress expertise.
• Define and shape the technical strategy through design documentation, architectural decisions, and collaboration with teams.
• Lead code reviews, oversee documentation, and promote continuous improvement processes.
• Ensure high-quality code delivery by resolving technical debt, promoting testing, and ensuring performance at scale.
