Flying Bark Productions is working on exciting projects such as Netflix's Stranger Things animated series, the recently announced Avatar: The Last Airbender feature film, Marvel Studios’ What If…?, Disney Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, as well as our production Tales From Outer Suburbia by Shaun Tan.

  • Not open for remote work, this position must be based in Madrid, Spain.
  • Please be aware that for this specific role, we are giving priority to artists who are eligible to work in Spain / Europe.

The Surfacing Artist establishes the look and surface qualities for animated characters, props, and environments. Through the use and development of textures and shaders, the Surfacing Artist guides the production process to achieve the desired visual style. The Surfacing Artist collaborates with or aids the rest of the CG team to ensure the proper workflow and specifications are being developed to achieve the desired look on all textures.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Working within a brief and using 2D design reference to paint CG textures faithful to the style of the production;
  • Develop shaders for all CG assets;
  • Submit CG assets for review, rendering in a way that best indicates their use within the Series;
  • Create UV maps as required, adhering to pipeline requirements and suitable for the resolution and complexity of the assets;
  • Collaborate with the CG modelling team to give feedback on UV mapping suitable for the resolution and complexity of the assets;
  • Work with the CG and BG teams on all creative and technical issues to ensure assets are delivered to the highest standard and correctly for subsequent departments;
  • Partner with lighters and compositors to meet schedules and deadlines as established by the Producer and Directors;
  • Perform all other duties reasonably required by the Production Company.

About you :

  • Production experience in animated features or episodic animation (not live action);
  • Portfolios showcasing mature, graphic stylization of reality preferred, similar to Spiderverse, Entergalactic, Arcane, and The Witness [Love, Death, Robots];
  • In-depth knowledge of Maya and Photoshop, high proficiency in painting software like Substance Painter or Mari;
  • Experience with Katana and good knowledge of photoreal and non-photoreal renderers;
  • Ability to work closely with CG and Design teams;
  • Ability to work within a team environment and follow guidance from creative and technical supervisors;
  • Ability to maintain productivity in a fast-paced environment while producing high-quality work;
  • Ability to work independently and under supervision;
  • Excellent communication and time management skills, with the ability to multitask and prioritize;
  • Perform other tasks related to the creation of computer-generated animation as required by the production.
