Job Title: Surfacing Artist

Flying Bark Productions is working on exciting projects such as Netflix's Stranger Things animated series, the upcoming Avatar: The Last Airbender feature film, Marvel Studios’ What If…?, Disney Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, and Tales From Outer Suburbia by Shaun Tan.

Location: Madrid, Spain (not open for remote work). Priority will be given to artists eligible to work in Spain/Europe.

Role Overview:

The Surfacing Artist establishes the look and surface qualities for animated characters, props, and environments. They develop textures and shaders, guiding the production to achieve the desired visual style. Collaboration with the CG team ensures textures meet workflow and aesthetic standards.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Paint CG textures based on a brief and 2D design references, maintaining the production's style.
  2. Develop shaders for CG assets.
  3. Review and render CG assets for production use.
  4. Create UV maps adhering to pipeline requirements, suitable for asset resolution and complexity.
  5. Provide feedback on UV mapping in collaboration with the CG modeling team.
  6. Work with CG and BG teams on creative and technical issues to ensure high-quality asset delivery.
  7. Coordinate with lighters and compositors to meet schedules and deadlines.
  8. Perform other duties as reasonably required by the production.
About You:
  • Experience in animated features or episodic content (not live action).
  • Portfolio demonstrating mature, graphic stylization similar to Spiderverse, Entergalactic, Arcane, or Love, Death & Robots.
  • Proficiency in Maya, Photoshop, Substance Painter, or Mari.
  • Experience with Katana and photoreal/non-photoreal renderers.
  • Ability to collaborate closely with CG and Design teams.
  • Teamwork skills and ability to follow guidance from supervisors.
  • Ability to produce high-quality work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Independent work skills and good communication and time management skills.
  • Willingness to perform other related tasks as required.
