Preply is seeking a Staff Backend Engineer in Barcelona to shape the technical roadmap for AI-enabled, media-rich learning experiences. You will own end-to-end initiatives, evolve architecture for scalable systems, and mentor senior engineers across product, engineering, and business partners globally.

You will drive developer experience, lead RFCs and post-mortems, and influence technical decisions while remaining hands-on for critical work.

• Shape and co-own the Learning Teams’ engineering strategy and roadmap with leadership alignment.
• Lead end-to-end strategic initiatives translating product vision into technical execution.
• Evolve architecture and core services for scalability, reliability, and cost efficiency.
• Improve developer experience and engineering practices through RFCs, post-mortems, and quality frameworks.
• Mentor and influence senior engineers, tech leads, EMs, and hiring panels while remaining hands-on for critical work.
• Make build-vs-buy decisions and lead vendor/tooling evaluations and negotiations.

As a Staff Engineer on the Learning Teams, you will shape and own the technical roadmap for AI-enabled, media-rich learning experiences. You’ll drive end-to-end initiatives, guide architecture for a scalable platform, and collaborate across product, engineering, and business stakeholders to deliver measurable outcomes. You’ll elevate engineering practices, mentor senior engineers, and influence tech decisions that impact learners and tutors worldwide. This role offers a chance to shape how we build and evolve learning experiences at scale with impact.
