As a Software Engineer...

You'll be part of our Claims team, responsible for the full development life cycle of the reimbursement claims decision-making process for our clients (more details here). You'll work on everything from analyzing veterinary documents and invoices to implementing automated validation systems that determine coverage eligibility, from the core of Barkibu's strategy all the way to deployment.

This claims process handles more than €50 million annually in reimbursements, and to date there is an opportunity to save €2 million for the company, making this a high-impact role.

The Claims team is responsible for automating pet health insurance claims processing - one of our most critical challenges. When pet parents visit the vet, they request reimbursement through our app by uploading documents (invoices, veterinary reports, and sometimes medical history). Our system needs to analyze these documents to make accurate coverage decisions while handling complex scenarios :

Pre-existing conditions that aren't covered by our policy

Waiting periods for specific treatments or procedures

Line-by-line invoice evaluation according to policy terms

You'll be working on cutting-edge solutions using OCR to extract text from documents, LLMs to interpret medical language, and business rules to apply policy conditions. Your contributions will help :

Minimize claim resolution times

Automate validation of coverage conditions

Improve user experience and transparency

Detect potential fraud or inconsistencies

Support our veterinary team with AI-assisted decision-making

We're also generating a massive database of structured clinical data that opens possibilities for future innovations. We're looking for someone curious, interested in working on a number of frameworks & languages and willing to help build the future of pet insurance with data, intelligence, and empathy.

At many companies, a Software Engineer is expected to focus solely on the code. At Barkibu, you'll be doing much more. You'll take ownership of features from ideation to deployment, and that means you'll wear many hats. You'll be :

A Business Analyst, breaking down user needs and product requirements.

A Project Manager, leading initiatives and managing the execution from start to finish.

A QA Specialist, ensuring high-quality releases without slowing down the pace of innovation.

A DevOps engineer, deploying and maintaining our infrastructure, ensuring smooth operations.

You're the perfect fit if...

You've got previous experience working on complex challenges like this one.

You are fluent in English. Spanish is a plus.

You have a product mindset. You have experience iterating on consumer products with a focus on growth.

You feel comfortable having full ownership over initiatives, pushing to reduce the scope of efforts, with frequent shipping and learning. You'll work closely with engineers, veterinarians, and business people to build solutions that directly impact our users.
