Context And Mission

The BSC Earth Sciences Department (ES) is looking for a software engineer to consolidate and further develop the existing software environment for the Global Health and Resilience Group’s portfolio of climate, health and digital technology projects. The software engineer will be a member of the Data and Diagnostics Team (DDT), which provides support and has developed a suite of R packages and dashboards used by the scientists of the department to perform their analysis and verify the simulations over observations and reanalysis, from sub-seasonal to decadal time scales, from the load of the data to the computation of the diagnostics and scores and the visualization.

The successful applicant will join the team to contribute to the development and computational optimization of R packages, dashboards and user interfaces linking climate and and health data in decision-support models, in collaboration with the department’s Global Health Resilience (GHR) group, led by ICREA Professor Rachel Lowe.The mission of the GHR group is to apply a interdisciplinary approach to co-designing policy-relevant methodological solutions, to enhance surveillance, preparedness and response to climate-sensitive disease outbreaks and emergence. In close collaboration with stakeholders and R tool users, the successful applicant will participate in different projects in collaboration with partners across the globe to develop and optimize R data and modelling analysis functions, packages and dashboards required to meet user needs. These data, modelling and visualization tools will be developed within a High Performance Computing environment.

Moreover, the applicant will contribute to the ongoing strategy for the development of the Earth Sciences Department tools, thereby increasing the applicability, international visibility and impact of the research and services emerging from present and future projects.

Key Duties

Support on software development, system administration and climate-health related tools configuration and optimization.

Design, develop, and deploy applications and micro-services for data integration, process automation, and infrastructure optimization (Docker, Podman...).

Co-development and optimization of R packages for climate and health projects.

Contribute to the development of training materials for capacity strengthening workshops. Present and document technical progress to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Liaise between internal and external groups across multiple research sites in-country and internationally.

Requirements

Education

A Masters in Computer Science, Telecommunications, Mathematics, Physics or related discipline

Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience

Prior experience in a software development or software engineer position

Excellent skills in R, Python and / or other interpreted languages

Experience with UNIX / LINUX environments and scripting languages (bash, etc)

Good programming skills to manage big and collaborative projects and experience with git (gitlab, github)

Interest in climate change and global health challenges

Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience

Knowledge of health related data types will be valued

Knowledge of geospatial data formats (GRIB, NetCDF, etc...)

Previous experience in HPC architecture and parallel programming (multi-threaded applications) will be valued

Competences

Capacity to interact and build strong relations with researchers, engineers, and users.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Ability to show initiative, prioritise tasks and work under set deadlines.

Ability to work both independently and within a team.

Ability to learn and adapt to multiple programming languages easily.

Fluency in English, both speaking and writing

Conditions

The position will be located at BSC within the Earth Sciences Department

We offer a full-time contract (37.5h / week), a good working environment, a highly stimulating environment with state-of-the-art infrastructure, flexible working hours, extensive training plan, restaurant tickets, private health insurance, support to the relocation procedures

Duration : Open-ended contract due to technical and scientific activities linked to the project and budget duration

Holidays : 23 paid vacation days plus 24th and 31st of December per our collective agreement

Development of the recruitment process

The selection will be carried out through a competitive examination system ("Concurso-Oposición"). The recruitment process consists of two phases :

Curriculum Analysis : Evaluation of previous experience and / or scientific history, degree, training, and other professional information relevant to the position. - 40 points

Interview phase : The highest-rated candidates at the curriculum level will be invited to the interview phase, conducted by the corresponding department and Human Resources. In this phase, technical competencies, knowledge, skills, and professional experience related to the position, as well as the required personal competencies, will be evaluated. - 60 points. A minimum of 30 points out of 60 must be obtained to be eligible for the position.

The recruitment panel will be composed of at least three people, ensuring at least 25% representation of women.

In accordance with OTM-R principles, a gender-balanced recruitment panel is formed for each vacancy at the beginning of the process. After reviewing the content of the applications, the panel will begin the interviews, with at least one technical and one administrative interview. At a minimum, a personality questionnaire as well as a technical exercise will be conducted during the process.

The panel will make a final decision, and all individuals who participated in the interview phase will receive feedback with details on the acceptance or rejection of their profile.
