Job summary

Placements24 seeks an experienced Substation Engineer to lead design and oversight of high-voltage substations across the Eastern Cape region, including site visits and coordination with multidisciplinary teams.

The role requires a strong background in high-voltage equipment, protection and control systems, and project management, with SA codes and standards knowledge. Travel to project sites is required. A Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering and 6+ years of relevant experience are expected.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.
• 6+ years in substation design/engineering.
• Strong HV equipment, power system studies and protection principles knowledge.
• CAD software and substation design tools experience.
• Protection and control system design for substations experience.
• Familiarity with SA electrical codes and standards.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and in teams.
• Willingness to travel to project sites in Eastern Cape.

Responsibilities

• Design and engineer electrical substation layouts and equipment selection.
• Develop single-line and three-line diagrams and control/protection designs.
• Specify materials for substations and upgrades.
• Coordinate with civil, structural, and protection engineers.
• Review contractor submittals and ensure design compliance.
• Provide technical support during construction, testing, and commissioning.
• Conduct site visits and monitor progress; resolve issues.
• Ensure adherence to national and international standards (SANS, IEC, IEEE).
• Prepare technical reports, project documents, and cost estimates.
• Assist in maintenance and operational procedure development.
