About the Role Our client, a prominent player in the energy infrastructure sector, is looking for an experienced Substation Engineer to join their team, serving projects in and around Queenstown, Eastern Cape . This role involves the design, development, and oversight of substation projects, ensuring compliance with technical specifications, safety standards, and regulatory requirements. You will work on a range of substation configurations, from small distribution facilities to larger transmission-level infrastructure. The ideal candidate possesses a strong background in high-voltage equipment, protection and control systems, and project coordination. This position offers a challenging yet rewarding opportunity to contribute to vital energy infrastructure development in the Eastern Cape .

Key Responsibilities

• Design and engineer electrical substation layouts, including equipment selection (transformers, switchgear, busbars, circuit breakers).
• Develop single-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, schematic diagrams, and control/protection system designs.
• Specify materials and equipment for substation construction and upgrades.
• Coordinate with other disciplines, such as civil, structural, and protection engineers, during the design phase.
• Review contractor submittals and ensure compliance with design documents.
• Provide technical support during the construction, testing, and commissioning phases of substation projects.
• Conduct site visits and inspections to monitor progress and resolve technical issues.
• Ensure adherence to relevant national and international standards (e.g., SANS, IEC, IEEE) and safety regulations.
• Prepare technical reports, project documentation, and cost estimates.
• Assist in the development of maintenance and operational procedures for substations.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.
• Minimum of 6 years of relevant experience in substation design and engineering.
• Strong understanding of high-voltage equipment, power system studies, and protection principles.
• Proficiency in using CAD software for electrical design and relevant substation design tools.
• Experience with protection and control system design for substations.
• Knowledge of substation construction practices and project management principles.
• Familiarity with relevant South African electrical codes and standards.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a project team.
• Willingness to travel to project sites in the Queenstown area and other locations within the Eastern Cape as required.
