Job Title : Senior Legal Counsel Data Privacy

About the role :

This role involves acting as a subject matter expert, providing data privacy advice and support across the Aptean group. You will interpret applicable legislation and advise on its practical application within our business operations, working with stakeholders at various levels and across different jurisdictions.

Your primary goal will be ensuring Aptean’s compliance with data privacy obligations, requiring you to identify risks, escalate issues appropriately, and operate effectively in a multi-jurisdictional environment. The role demands a hands-on approach, strong professional ethics, and the ability to manage multiple priorities calmly and efficiently.

Day-to-day responsibilities :

  • Lead and implement privacy initiatives such as data mapping, retention, DPIAs, SCCs, international data transfers, and privacy by design for new acquisitions, ensuring projects are completed successfully.
  • Manage data subject rights requests and oversee their resolution.
  • Develop and support privacy frameworks, policies, and procedures in collaboration with legal, IT, security, and other teams.
  • Analyze and improve privacy processes, assist with audits and risk assessments.
  • Escalate privacy risks and recommend legal solutions.
  • Design and deliver privacy training to employees, promoting awareness and compliance throughout the organization.
  • Monitor legal developments in data privacy law and update programs and training accordingly.
  • Serve as the main contact for staff, legal teams, and data protection authorities regarding privacy matters.
  • Assist with data incident management and collaborate with the Security team on security policies.
  • Review privacy aspects of marketing initiatives and third-party agreements.
  • Work with internal teams to support privacy compliance across jurisdictions and navigate local laws.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously, liaising with regulatory authorities as needed.

Requirements :

  • Qualified lawyer with in-house experience, preferably in a software or IT company.
  • 8-10 years of experience in data privacy initiatives and support.
  • Data Privacy certification (CIPP / E required, CIPP / US preferred).
  • Experience drafting privacy agreements, policies, notices, and managing data security incidents.
  • Strong knowledge of GDPR and other relevant data privacy laws.
  • Pragmatic with technical legal expertise, capable of influencing stakeholders and fostering trust.
  • Excellent communication, drafting skills, and ability to work independently and in teams.
  • Positive attitude, solution-oriented, and capable of collaborating across all levels.
  • Experience in the software industry and supporting security teams with technical controls.
  • Knowledge of technical privacy controls (encryption, anonymization, pseudonymization) and standards like ISO 27001, NIST CSF, SOC 2.
  • Experience in both in-house and law firm settings is preferred.
  • Strong work ethic, capable of managing high workloads with minimal supervision.
