We are seeking a Senior Data Engineer to own the architecture and development of our core data platform, including the design of our data warehouse and infrastructure, co-own and supervise data modeling in our data collection tools, and support diverse data systems integrations.

Please note, this is a Remote First role. We are open to candidates within +/- 2 hours CET, with a preference for candidates based in Spain or Germany due to company registered locations.

How you'll help build one

1. Data Platform Ownership: Lead the design and implementation of our data platform, ensuring scalability and robustness.
2. Data Modelling: Engage in data modeling for third-party data collection tools like Benchling, optimizing data structures for effective integration and utilization. Support stakeholders managing third-party data collection tools (ERPs, CRMs, etc.) by providing insights and recommendations to strengthen their data models.
3. Data Visualization and Analytics Culture: Foster a strong data analytics culture by developing and implementing a robust data analytics layer to support insights, ML development, and dashboards.
4. Cloud Infrastructure Management: Participate in managing our cloud infrastructure to support data operations and application needs.
5. Strategic Planning: Contribute to discussions and development of the tech roadmap, aligning initiatives with business goals.
6. Supervision and Mentorship: Oversee and mentor junior team members or interns, ensuring best practices and high-quality code.
7. Cross-Domain Collaboration: Work closely with domain experts to model data based on business logic. Collaborate with software engineers and data scientists to ensure seamless integration of cloud services, including data pipelines and ML services.

Who you are

• You have at least 3 years of proven experience in data engineering and platform architecture, especially in startup and scale-up environments.
• You are highly experienced in data modeling and database design for various data types, with additional experience modeling scientific data a plus.
• You have demonstrated ability to lead challenging projects in research or similar organizations.
• You thrive in collaborative, open-minded environments and value consensus.
• You are proficient in SQL and Python-based ETL pipelines.
• You have advanced knowledge of cloud services and infrastructure, with hands-on experience in Google Cloud Platform or AWS preferred.
• You enjoy working with cross-functional teams in remote or hybrid settings.
• You have working knowledge of English, as it is our business language.
• You are adaptable to rapidly changing technology landscapes and business needs.
• You are eager to learn and stay updated with industry trends.

Optional: Experience working with or modeling materials engineering, chemistry, or biological data.
