Research Scientist Positions at Instituto Biofisika (IBF)

The Instituto Biofisika (IBF), a joint research centre of the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) and the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), focuses on fundamental and translational biophysics research. Located at the Leioa Campus of the University of the Basque Country, it offers a highly collaborative environment.

Currently, the IBF is accepting expressions of interest for research scientist positions at both postdoctoral and predoctoral levels. Successful candidates will join the Laboratory for Numerical Methods of Cryo Electron Tomography (cryoET), led by Dr. Daniel Castaño Díez.

The group specializes in developing computational methods for analyzing 3D cellular imagery, primarily using its in-house software platform Dynamo. Recent projects, funded by the Human Frontiers Science Program, have provided insights into exocytosis mechanisms in living cells through cryo electron tomography processing. The group is now extending its tools by integrating deep learning techniques to identify and characterize small, flexible proteins within their natural environments.

The successful applicant will contribute to developing these methodologies, maintaining the software, and analyzing cryoET datasets from external collaborators.

Qualifications
  • Degree in Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Strong background in Matlab.
  • Interest in Life Sciences research.
  • Experience in Deep Learning or other AI methods.
  • Solid knowledge of numerical mathematics, including optimization techniques.
  • Proficiency in software prototyping and production.
  • Good command of MATLAB, Python, C++, and/or CUDA.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Experience in Image Processing for Electron or Light Microscopy.
  • Experience in Molecular Dynamics Simulations.
Additional Details
