Instituto Biofisika - Research Scientist Positions

The Instituto Biofisika (IBF), a joint research centre of the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) and the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), is located at the Leioa Campus of the University of the Basque Country. It focuses on fundamental and translational biophysics research and promotes a highly collaborative culture.

Currently, the IBF is accepting expressions of interest for research scientist positions at both postdoctoral and predoctoral levels. Successful candidates will join the Laboratory for Numerical Methods of Cryo Electron Tomography (cryoET), led by Dr. Daniel Castaño Díez.

The group specializes in developing computational methodologies for the analysis and interpretation of 3D cellular imagery, primarily through its in-house software platform Dynamo. Recent research funded by the Human Frontiers Science Program has advanced understanding of exocytosis mechanisms in living cells via cryo electron tomography processing techniques. The group aims to extend these tools by integrating novel deep learning methods to identify and characterize small, flexible proteins in their natural environments.

The successful applicant will contribute to developing these methodologies, maintaining and enhancing the software, and analyzing cryoET datasets from external collaborators.

Candidate Qualifications
  1. Degree in Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering, or similar, with a strong background in Matlab.
  2. Interest in Life Sciences research.
  3. Experience in Deep Learning and/or other AI methods.
  4. Solid background in numerical mathematics, including optimization techniques.
  5. Proficiency in software prototyping and development.
  6. Proficiency in MATLAB, Python, C++, and/or CUDA.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Experience in Image Processing for Electron and Light Microscopy.
  • Experience in Molecular Dynamics Simulations.
