Research Scientist Positions at Instituto Biofisika (CSIC-UPV/EHU)

The Instituto Biofisika (IBF) is a joint research centre of the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) and the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC). Located at the Leioa Campus, it focuses on fundamental and translational biophysics research and fosters a highly collaborative environment.

The IBF is currently accepting expressions of interest for research scientist positions at both postdoctoral and predoctoral levels. Successful candidates will join the Laboratory for Numerical Methods of Cryo Electron Tomography (cryoET), led by Dr. Daniel Castaño Díez.

The group specializes in developing computational methodologies for analyzing 3D cellular imagery, primarily through the Dynamo software platform. Recent research funded by the Human Frontiers Science Program has advanced cryo electron tomography processing, revealing insights into cellular mechanics and exocytosis.

Current efforts focus on extending this tool with deep learning techniques to identify and characterize small, flexible proteins in their natural context. The successful applicant will contribute to these methodological developments, software maintenance, and the analysis of cryoET datasets from external collaborators.

Candidate Requirements
  • Degree in Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering, or related fields.
  • Strong background in MATLAB.
  • Interest in Life Sciences research.
  • Experience in Deep Learning or Artificial Intelligence methods.
  • Solid knowledge of numerical mathematics, including optimization techniques.
  • Proficiency in software prototyping and development.
  • Good command of MATLAB, Python, C++, and/or CUDA.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Experience in Image Processing for Electron or Light Microscopy.
  • Experience in Molecular Dynamics Simulations.
Additional Details

Positions are flexible with a potential start in Fall 2025, with funding secured until August 2029. Salaries range from €27,000 to €42,000 for BSc/MSc candidates and €38,000 to €53,000 for PhD candidates, aligned with experience and qualifications.
