Descripción del empleo

Instituto Biofisika (IBF)

The Instituto Biofisika (IBF) is a joint research centre of the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) and the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC). Located at the Leioa Campus of the University of the Basque Country, it focuses on fundamental and translational biophysics research and fosters a highly collaborative environment.

The IBF is currently accepting expressions of interest for research scientist positions at both postdoctoral and predoctoral levels. Successful candidates will join the Laboratory for Numerical Methods of Cryo Electron Tomography (cryoET), led by Dr. Daniel Castaño Díez.

Research Focus

The group advances computational methodologies for the automated analysis and interpretation of 3D cellular imagery, primarily through its in-house software platform Dynamo. Recent research has provided deep insights into the mechanics of exocytosis in living cells, utilizing cryo electron tomography processing techniques. The current goal is to extend this tool by integrating novel deep learning techniques to identify and characterize small, flexible proteins within their natural surroundings.

Responsibilities
  • Develop new methodologies for cryoET data analysis.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of the Dynamo software platform.
  • Analyze cryoET datasets provided by external collaborators.
Candidate Profile

Ideal candidates should hold a degree in Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering, or similar, with a strong background in MATLAB. An interest in Life Sciences research is expected.

Qualifications
  • Experience in Deep Learning and/or other AI methods.
  • Solid background in numerical mathematics, including optimization techniques.
  • Proficiency in software prototyping and development.
  • Good command of MATLAB, Python, C++, and/or CUDA.
Desirable Skills
  • Experience in Image Processing for Electron and Light Microscopy.
  • Experience in Molecular Dynamics Simulations.
Position Details

Start date is flexible, aiming for Fall 2025, with funding secured until August 2029. Salaries will be commensurate with experience, ranging from €27,000 to €42,000 for BSc/MSc holders and €38,000 to €53,000 for PhD holders, according to CSIC standards.

Application Process

Interested candidates should submit a single PDF including their Curriculum Vitae, academic record, and a motivation letter to ******.
