The Red Hat OpenShift Service Mesh team is seeking a motivated Principal Software Engineer to join and grow with us. You will help enhance and optimize Istio for use within our enterprise Kubernetes platform, Red Hat OpenShift. Your expertise will contribute to delivering features, enhancements, and bug fixes for our customers and the broader Istio community.

This role allows you to develop your skills across various languages, frameworks, and technologies while being part of Red Hat’s unique open source culture.

What you will do

1. Collaborate with peers and the Istio community on designing and developing features, enhancements, and bug fixes.
2. Mentor and coach junior team members and coordinate with cross-functional teams.
3. Create examples demonstrating Istio features within Red Hat OpenShift.
4. Engage with support teams to resolve customer issues.
5. Work with documentation teams to improve usage guides for Istio within OpenShift.
6. Interact with open source project teams and communities globally.

What you will bring

1. Extensive experience in software development.
2. Over 3 years programming in Go, with experience in controllers and operators on Kubernetes.
3. Over 3 years working with cloud technologies like Red Hat OpenShift, Kubernetes, Docker, etc.
4. Knowledge of networking fundamentals and protocols (TCP, TLS, HTTP, HTTPS).
5. Proactive problem-solving skills with minimal supervision.
6. Fluent in English, both written and verbal.
7. Passion for open source, positive attitude, and openness to sharing ideas.
8. Open source contribution experience is a plus.
