Principal Software Engineer - Control Plane Engineering Team (Waterford Office, Ireland or Remote Spain or Italy, or Brno Office)

Join Red Hat as a Principal Software Engineer in the Control Plane Engineering Team . This role is based in Waterford, Ireland, or remotely in Spain or Italy, or at our Brno Office.

About The Job

APIs are the core of Kubernetes and Red Hat OpenShift. We are expanding our control plane engineering team, focusing on the Kubernetes API machinery, both upstream and within OpenShift. If you are passionate about CustomResourceDefinitions, kube-apiserver, admission, aggregation, garbage collection, priority & fairness, or server-side apply, we want you on our global team. As an OpenShift engineer, you will be part of one of the top Kubernetes teams worldwide, helping to advance features in the upstream community and ensuring a robust OpenShift Kubernetes foundation.

Responsibilities

  • Design and lead new feature development; contribute to high-profile open source projects in Kubernetes SIGs
  • Develop and submit patches for bug fixes; review contributions from others
  • Test components at all levels; improve our CI systems
  • Support your code in production for internal and external customers
  • Enhance existing solutions and workflows, favoring simple, repeatable, and reliable approaches
  • Communicate effectively with all team levels, including senior management
  • Create documentation, diagrams, comments, and clear code to demonstrate solutions
  • Collaborate with engineers across the OpenShift team and support teams

Qualifications

  • Extensive experience in software engineering
  • Experience with Linux OS
  • 3-5 years coding in Go, Java, C / C++, or similar languages
  • Strong communication skills in English
  • Problem-solving and troubleshooting expertise, including root cause analysis

Preferred Skills

  • Deep understanding of Kubernetes API Server, Control Plane, and architecture
  • Experience with Red Hat OpenShift
  • Knowledge of Distributed Systems
  • Contributions to open source projects or Kubernetes SIGs
  • Degree in computer science or related field, or equivalent experience
  • Public speaking and presentation skills
  • Enjoy solving complex problems and working with emerging tech
