Role Overview

As the Principal Backend Lead (Java), you will own the design, implementation, and maintenance of Vitio’s backend systems, with a primary focus on Java-based services. Your goal is to ensure robust performance, clarity in system architecture, and a straightforward, no-nonsense approach to solving engineering challenges. You will also provide leadership, mentor team members, and enforce standards that drive high-quality, stable software in a regulated healthcare context.

Key Responsibilities

1. Backend Architecture & Development: Architect and maintain scalable, reliable Java-based services. Implement proven coding standards and best practices. Design APIs for seamless integration, considering security and performance. Focus on simple, maintainable, and cost-effective code, reducing complexity and enabling fast iteration.
2. System Scalability & Reliability: Ensure backend components meet uptime, performance, and security requirements. Oversee load and stress testing, and collaborate with DevOps to streamline deployments and manage cloud infrastructure.
3. Team Leadership & Mentorship: Guide backend engineers, promote accountability, conduct code reviews, and set high standards for efficiency and craftsmanship.
4. Compliance & Healthcare IT Standards: Collaborate to ensure backend implementations comply with healthcare regulations like ISO 27001, GDPR, HIPAA. Reinforce security practices.
5. Collaboration & Communication: Coordinate with cross-functional teams, communicate progress and risks clearly, and foster a respectful team environment rooted in professionalism.

Required Skills & Experience

• Java Expertise: 8+ years with Java (preferably Java 8+), Spring Framework, JVM technologies. Proven experience building enterprise applications.
• Backend Design & Architecture: Experience designing microservices and REST APIs. Knowledge of SQL/NoSQL databases. Experience with high-availability systems.
• Leadership & Mentorship: Past success leading engineering teams, providing honest feedback, and simplifying complex concepts.
• Healthcare & Compliance Awareness (Preferred): Knowledge of healthcare regulations like HIPAA, GDPR, and experience in regulated industries.
• Tooling & Infrastructure (Nice to Have): Exposure to Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, CI/CD pipelines.
• Software Craftsmanship & XP Practices: Proficiency in TDD, CI, Pair Programming, Refactoring, DDD, Clean Code, SOLID principles.
• Code Testing & Automation: Experience with unit and integration testing using JUnit, Mockito, Testcontainers.
