Role Overview

The Principal Backend Lead (Java) will own the design, implementation, and maintenance of Vitio’s backend systems, focusing on Java-based services. The role emphasizes performance, clear architecture, and effective problem-solving. You will lead, mentor, and enforce standards to ensure high-quality, stable software within a healthcare regulatory framework.

Key Responsibilities

1. Backend Architecture & Development

• Architect and maintain scalable, reliable Java services.
• Implement coding standards and best practices.
• Design APIs for security and performance.
• Create maintainable, cost-effective code with a focus on long-term scalability and simplicity.

1. System Scalability & Reliability

• Ensure backend components meet uptime, performance, and security standards.
• Manage load testing and optimization.
• Coordinate with DevOps for deployment and cloud infrastructure management.

1. Team Leadership & Mentorship

• Guide backend engineers, promote best practices.
• Conduct code reviews and provide feedback.
• Lead by example, maintaining high standards.

1. Compliance & Healthcare IT Standards

• Work with teams to ensure compliance with healthcare regulations (e.g., ISO 27001, GDPR, HIPAA).
• Reinforce security practices.

1. Collaboration & Communication

• Work with DevOps, Frontend, QA, and Product teams for workflow transparency.
• Communicate progress and technical decisions clearly.
• Promote a respectful and professional team environment.

Required Skills & Experience

• Java Expertise: 8+ years with Java (preferably Java 8+), Spring Framework, JVM technologies.
• Backend Design & Architecture: Experience with microservices, REST APIs, SQL/NoSQL databases, high-availability systems.
• Leadership & Mentorship: Proven team leadership, feedback, and focus on code quality.
• Healthcare & Compliance Awareness (Preferred): Knowledge of healthcare regulations and compliant backend development.
• Tooling & Infrastructure (Nice to Have): Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, CI/CD pipelines.
• Software Craftsmanship & XP Practices: Strong in TDD, CI, Pair Programming, Refactoring, DDD, Clean Code, SOLID principles.
• Testing & Automation: Skilled in unit/integration testing with JUnit, Mockito, Testcontainers.
